Just finished it, loved it!
« on: April 15, 2014, 05:34:28 PM »
Way too short for my taste, we need 50 more adventures of the duo  :D

Am I wrong to say I totally ship David and Kye ?  8)

A lot of fun, got stuck a few times but was mostly me being dense. Awesome story, music, character and graphics A+++++

If you finished it this early, it MUST be too short.

Well, I started it today and played for 2 1/2 hours.    I am at the beginning of chapter three.

How many chapters are there?   If the game is following standard story structure, this feels like the end of the first act.   I'm seeing a problem already.    This game doesn't have a very meaty plot yet.   I'm making choices but they do not seem to drive the story forward.   All I've really done is adopt a bodyguard.   This is a great disappointment because in any "Gabriel Knight" game or even "Grey Matter," the story was already laced with intrigues and moving forward by the end of act one.   I'm not feeling it with Moebius.

Maybe I'm wrong and the game is 20+ chapters, meaning I've barely begun but then, it only took you two days to finish, so I'm getting worried.

If you're at the beginning of chapter three, you should have some questions at least:
Who is attacking Malachi? Or are they after David? But if they're after David, why.. ?
What does Malachi mean by 'get in trouble' if he doesn't take those damn pills?
Who the hell is FITA, and what do they want with Malachi?
You'll get meatier questions in chapter 3, however.

That said, I also found the game rather short. It addressed one of Malachi's internal stories/makes a good 'coming of age' story for 'Kye; but I didn't think it wrapped up the external story sufficiently. Mind, this may be personal taste.

BUT! I want more. I want more between Malachi and David. And yes, Gretchen. And Dexter. And I want to know more about Moebius. I want to see what happens with <politician> and <lady>.

I like that the climactic action of the story was so appropriate for Malachi-the-character, and his climactic decision, which denoted the character's 'coming of age', was over in the blink of an eye. Sometimes, when you mature, it takes internal weeks or months or years of preparation, yet the actual moment is like that, just so .. well, momentary!

Perhaps the next in the series will involve David getting past "are you entirely unbroken?" "... if you mean as a person ..."

And yeah, I totally ship David and Malachi. I don't know if it's appropriate to the characters exactly: I think they're more likely to end up in a kind of platonic filios/agape bond; but dammit, they'd be so CUTE together!

As for the rest of the universe: I think poor Kassandra is somewhere in FITA's towers, living in a fancy and comfortable apartment, but never being allowed to leave the tower. SOMEONE has to keep an eye on the fall of Troy, after all!

Yeah don't know if the writer ships them but I totally do!  ;D

To answer raven, the game has 7 and "1/2" chapters and the story takes long to set up but it gets a meaty as a  barbecue on the later chapters. Chapters 4 and 5 are a bit bigger than Cairo but Chapter 6 is HUGE and chapter 7 is about the same size as chapters 4 and 5, then there's the epilogue that I counted as chapter "7 1/2"

You should start understanding all those lose threads on the next mission after Cairo, which is when David and Malachi meet. Don't worry, if you are not into shipping game characters, the game itself only portrays a strong friendship and there is absolutely no romance implied until the very end and even then it is me being silly and not what is actually in the game which could be seen as just Malachi finally trusting someone - as a friend.

As for the the story, it is so big that the 7 chapters barely scratch the surface. I agree 100% with what  Tazettae wrote, it leaves a lot of open questions, I am hoping we just saw the first of a series about  Malachi adventures following the Moebius mystery.. and Kassandra's predictions ;)

I'm glad that you agree that Kassandra should be in there! :)

But yes, David says of Malachi "He's just my employer!" And Malachi, of course, regularly claims that he never makes any attachments to ANYONE. And I said my personal take in my previous post: they're going to be in that level between best of friends and brothers.

That said, they'd be so cute spooned up together (Kye on the inside), or with David lying on his back, one hand behind his hand, the other around Kye - and Kye snuggled up with his head on David's chest.
So. Gorgeous.

Indeed!!!

That cutscene with David holding Malachi in the hotel after a panic attack.. So cute! Looked like they were hugging. And I add a mental "ofc they are holding hands" when they walk back to the chopper at the end  8)

But I guess Jane left it ambiguous to let us headcanon bros or lovers as we wish.  And to not get in trouble with the Fox News crowd. They crucified Bioware years ago for having one homosexual character in their games. Bioware, to their credit, completely ignored them and have had all kinds of relationships in their games but they are a much bigger company and have the backing of EA. A company just starting can't afford this kind of controversy.

grumblemuttercensoredcensoredcensored.

I'll leave the rest of what I have to say, unsaid. Otherwise I'll derail the thread.

Anyway: game is great.

Looking forward to act II.  ;D

Just beat it myself.  Thoughts...

Pros:
The backgrounds are typically very good, as well as the comic style cutscenes.
The voice acting is very good, especially the voice actor for Rector.
The music is excellent....though there aren't many tracks.
Storyline is good overall, though by the time the game ends, it feels like it's a small story designed to set up bigger ones in future games.  Kind of has a Bond-type feel to it.
The investigative puzzles are fun.

Cons:
Too short, probably takes about 6-7 hrs to beat.
As others have said, the laborious and sometimes goofy character animations slow down the game a lot.  Characters need more detail as well.
The puzzles are kinda "meh" overall, and finishing the game with a maze is not good imo.
Even though I said the storyline is good overall, I'd probably say as games written by Jensen go, it's the weakest entry she's done.  The "villain" needed more development in particular.

Overall:
I liked the game a lot, and though I'd rather see the Gabriel Knight universe explored more, Moebius is intriguing in its way.  Thanks for making the game ;D

I like the Gabriel Knight series but didn't play much of it, I got stuck on Sins of the Father on a part where you had to slow the CPU to play and never went back. I am waiting for the remake now :D

What is interesting to me is how Malachi and Gabriel seem opposite to each other. Malachi is rich, GK is penniless, Malachi is arrogant and projects self confidence while being deeply insecure, GK is self- deprecating and easy going but has an inner self confidence he hides from others. GK has had a family who shared his gift, Malachi is the first in centuries to have his gift which is not tied to his family at all.

All in all Malachi Rector and Gabriel Knight seem like complete opposites but both are kick arse characters. Jane is an awesome writer, can't wait to see more from her. And from her husband! Moebius music rocks and I remember loving the GK soundtrack!

Only registered to say: I was absolutely intrigued by the story of this friendship going back centuries in history. There is more to tell about Kye-Malachi and David. I want a sequel!  :)

Just finished the game and can say this: I liked the story, the characters, the locations, also the efforts for animating certain actions.

As soon as I realised this is one of those "don't need it yet, can't take it yet" games, I never got stuck for long. It doesn't add much to realism though, when you keep people waiting for hours, while you travel to and fro to pick up the usual suspects. Especially far-fetched was the "buy a newspaper" puzzle. Got a wallet, but no coins. Okay, happens. But isn't the cash register in his own shop a viable option? Or asking Gretchen to lend him some? Of course Malachai knows exactly, where his stash is, but you as the player will have to find it for him. And because he's not a normal person, he doesn't keep it in any practical place, so you have a perfect reason to explore his apartment. Right? Right.

However, I'm happy with the game and glad I backed it. Next time you use my hometown in a chapter, please add a map and a few more locations and references. ;)

Especially far-fetched was the "buy a newspaper" puzzle.
I thought the hostess gift was the most far fetched (literally). :P
