upgrading system software!

Hi,
I want to upgrade system software of my PlayStation. What will happen to my game's progress if I upgrade the system software? Should I start from the beginning?

I'm not sure which game you're specifically referring, but as none of ours are available on the PlayStation, it's possibly you stopped off at the wrong forum?
