I don't think it's completely dead, but progress this past year has probably been so slow that it wasn't worth mentioning. Too bad, because last January they said that the update was the first of several to go over the progress... and then crickets since then. I'm sure the developers that remain had the best of intentions to finish, but my guess is that we'd be lucky to ever get any more updates, short of well-intentioned assurances that "it's still being worked on."

In my opinion, they probably shouldn't have taken on any of the extra features all those years back... like improved graphics and the clothing-dynamics they talked about in the last update. We would've all been happier to just receive a game with dated graphics .. Not like anyone complains about the wadjet eye pixel art.

I also seem to remember an update years ago saying that the project would be done by 2018.. and it kind of reminds me of James Cameron's talks about the Avatar sequels..

In any case, I'm sure I'll keep checking this board every few months hoping to see something.. but like most of the rest of you, I'm disappointed that I've lost hope in an episode 5 release.

Shalkar

I actually cried today. This is my favorite game an I am praying for a miracle to have this game complete. Thank you Shalkar

If ever you guys feel like TSL Episode 5 is taking too long to be released, just remember the existence of Sonic Robo Blast 2, a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame that has been in development since 1998, and despite being released in a mostly finished state in December 2019, is still not 100% completed yet. That game is older than some the of the people on this forum are.

At least we had 4 really good episodes. Better than we could have had! And less of a cliffhanger than some endings of full tv series!

At what point does Number's actions stop being CPR and start becoming necrophilia ??

I'd say we are way past that !!
It seems totally incredible to me now that everyone spent that evening as though it were just like any other. From the railway station came the sound of shunting trains, ringing and rumbling, softened almost into melody by the distance ...

I'd say at the same point that you become so butthurt on the behalf of Shalkar--someone you'll (hopefully) never meet--that you unironically and directly compare me--some wiseass on the Internet you'll (also hopefully) never meet--to a necrophiliac, one of the most disgusting things that anyone could do. Seriously.

First of all, that particular phrase is apocryphal, and CPR and necrophilia, while similar in the physical sense, are completely the opposite in intent, and the only time one would lead to the next would be if one of the parties had an emotional commitment to the other; that's all I'll be saying on that particular subject.

Secondly, even if that saying did make sense somehow, how would you, or anyone with even a shred of common sense and decency, even say something that ridiculous and feel okay with it? Am I a Nazi, too?

I'm not even mad at you, I just feel sorry for you. At what low does one have to stoop to rush to someone like Shalkar's defense? Do you see a kindred spirit in him?
I have no mouth, and I must scream.

TSL is, necessarily, always going to take a back seat to products and services that will help Phoenix pay its bills. TSL is a volunteer fan project, as it's always been, and Phoenix is first and foremost a business.

While I understand that, a quick progress update once in a while can't hurt anything. I still feel like they used us, the fans to build their commercial business and now they can't even give us updates anymore. If I knew that episode 5 was ever going to be released I might be more inclined to try their other games because I find TSL quite good and their paid games are probably also good. But we can't even get yearly updates anymore. Has it been worked on at all this last year? I don't know.

Whoa I don't feel used whatsoever! I absolutely love their other games. This is a great studio and the content made thus far on this FREE project is phenomenal. They owe us nothing and by contrast, us fans of this FREE work owe giving their commercial games a frigging chance! So they don't do updates, so life gets in the way. This is no different than fan remakes of games. Look at the 3d version of Kings Quest 4 that's being developed. The lead designer who made many of the models and animations literally DIED yet that project lives on and limps along years after that fact and almost a decade after initial inception. You have no idea what is going on in the lives of the folks involved in this particular project. So what if they don't have a moderator/PR person with the time and patience to deal with unappreciative flaming posts that litter this particular thread or any news to report.
Just be thankful of what we've been given, be respectful of the studio's developers, and try to keep posts here positive. My time in Stonehenge was magical yet the first thing I thought of was this game. That's saying something for a studio that didn't make a dime off of it.

GrahamRocks!

Huh, not KQ6? Then again, the Stonehenge there is mostly just aesthetics rather than being used for something. Though it does make sense for it to be a place to cast great spells in TSL, I think, with it being a place of mysterious power and all that.

Happy March to the Dev team! Hope you are all well!
Grateful about a free game currently in development & offering support to the dev team in hopes the final episode will be released. Will keep waiting for updates.

Shalkar, don't be jealous of me and GrahamRocks' nonexistent relationship just because we have more chemistry than you've had with anyone you've ever met.

Shalkar

Is the game going to be finished?

ddcastro1983

It's already finished - the final episode (Episode 4) was released several years back. Across the span of all 4 episodes, it's a great game. Closure to the King's Quest legacy was given in 2016 with the Odd Gentleman game. I'd say we fans made out much better than we did in 98 when we thought that Mask of Eternity was the last we'd ever see of the series.

They kept us waiting for nothing. Its not finished

Heck with the odd gentlemans kings quest it's irrelevant

Victor382017

Hi Everyone,

I believe that chapter 5 is still coming out Phoenix is an amazing game company and this was an amazing game series I don't believe they would just leave us hanging I believe that there is a reason to their silence and not posting even if it's for the fact that maybe they don't have anything new to post at the time or they could be going through some hard times.  and not to mention we have no right to hold them to any standards being that this is 100% voluntary project they are not getting paid for this project I don't know about you guys but I am definitely not going to fault them nor am I going to give up hope.  :)

Numbers

There are many problems with POStudios and TSL, but they're understandable problems. No budget? To be expected from any newbie company. Experimental? Sure, some of the puzzles are a bit odd and aren't very intuitive. Amateurish storytelling? Yeah, it's got that problem too. POStudios may be many things. But one thing they're not is malicious. Nor are they greedy*.

This is a passion project through and through, and they haven't demanded a penny for it. And they've never been anything but respectful towards their fans--or at least towards the ones who deserve respect. I distinctly remember seeing an outright hostile reviewer giving TSL Episode 2 a score of 15/100, only to be humbled by Cesar in the comments, defending his game with the utmost tact.

So before you decide to badger them yet again, just know that you have no authority over them. They do not need to bow down to your every whim. This goes for Shalkar, who has done nothing but act like an immature manchild during his entire tenure on this forum, and also to ThunderChild, who had the audacity to unfavorably compare POStudios to Valve, when the only similarity between TSL Episode 5 and Half-Life 3 is how long they've been in development, and whose company policies couldn't be more night and day.

*except maybe refusing to release the soundtracks to TSL Episodes 3 and 4 even though it would be a good PR move at this point
