Although neither game is that great, Phantasmagoria had more effort put into it. That being said, Darkseed II is more entertaining due to how completely ridiculous everything is; Phantasmagoria is quite boring by comparison. If I had to pick a game to play, I'd pick Phantasmagoria, but if I had to pick a game to watch someone else play, it'd be Darkseed II. Some of the things in that game need to be seen to be believed, and it's all the better if you're seeing it with a partner. Mike Dawson is kind of a miracle; I've never seen a video game "hero" who is such an unlikable loser. I am including Curtis from Phantasmagoria 2 in that estimation.

Also, that rape scene in Phantasmagoria was apparently put in there to tip off the player that something was wrong with the husband...in case the player was too stupid to notice him acting like an abusive lunatic in almost every previous scene. And it's highly insignificant, given it never comes up again and you can go right back to looking at yourself in the mirror and preening like it never happened. Seriously, if you cut that tasteless scene out, nothing would've been lost.

I especially like this exchange from the Retsupurae riff on Phantasmagoria, which edited out the rape scene and cut to immediately afterwards:
Lowtax (upbeat): That was the sexiest night ever!
Slowbeef (disgusted): I don't know what you're talking about.
I have no mouth, and I must scream.

Well, you said pretty much what I was going to say, albeit in more detail.

It's funny that you brought up that scene in Phantasmogoria, because my reaction to it wasn't disgust, my reaction was "Well, that was weird and not terrifying at all. And where's my nudity in this game? I was told there's boobs and I see nothing!"

Was Dark Seed II even a Sierra game?

It's good to know you're into that sort of thing. You freakin' psycho.

Darkseed II and its predecessor were developed and published by Cyberdreams, a little-known company that only ever made two good games (the first Darkseed and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream), and went on to make Noir: A Shadow Thriller--a game so obscure that it has no Wikipedia page--before apparently going bankrupt and/or being dissolved by other companies.

Also, if you're wondering who developed and published what, there's a little thing called Google that can help you out.
