In the original 'Gabriel Knight 1: Sins of the Fathers' by Sierra, there are several easter eggs and references. Have they been preserved in the remake (20th anniversary) by Pinkerton-Phoenix tandem? Here I'm going to write about that question.

There is also another thread around the new easter eggs and references from the remake.

Here we go:

GK1-Sierra: At Tulane university there's a bulletin board with a reference to Laura Bow (another Sierra's game).

Remake: The bulletin board has been removed and Laura Bow with it.

GK1-Sierra: When Gabriel calls to the Travel Agency, he wants to visit Anderson, Indiana (Jane Jensen received a BA in Computer Science from Anderson University in Indiana).

Remake: Gabriel keeps wanting to visit Anderson, and the reply is the same: "I'm so sorry, but you can't get there from here."

I like very much this subtle nod!  :)

GK1-Sierra: When at the door of Madame Cazanoux, and you knock without your priest shirt, you can get Gabe to say "Landshark!", to which Cazanoux replies: "You are no Bill Murray". This is a reference to the early episodes of Saturday Night Live, when this was a recurring sketch.

Remake: It has been preserved.

I'm from Spain and I don't understand the joke.  :(

GK1-Sierra: Upon entering St George's, you may hear Gabe quirk: "Lucy, I'm home!" Which refers to a 1950s US comedy show called "I love Lucy".

Remake: I've tried 45 times returning to St George's, and I haven't heard it. So it has been removed. In fact, now there are only 3 different lines of dialogue when returning; in the original they were 5.

It's a shame  :( , because I really love Tim Curry imitating Ricky Ricardo; and I wanted to hear Jason Victor saying "Lucy, I'm home!", because I love him (Graham) imitating Tim Curry (Gabriel) in The Silver Lining (forever!)

Thanks to Dr. Bonny Ploeg for the reference. She is my favourite Eggjäger and archaelogist. Indiana Jones 2nd, Lara Croft 3rd, Howard Carter 4th.  :P

I've recorded 2 mp3 about that:

** The 1st (Gabriel_Graham.mp3) include 3 cuts of "What can you tell me about ... voodoo?":
- 1st cut: Tim Curry (Gabriel) saying the line in the original game (Sierra)
- 2nd cut: Jason Victor (King Graham) imitating the line in The Silver Lining.
- 3rd cut: Jason Victor (Gabriel) saying the line in the remake.

** The 2nd (Lucy Im home.mp3) include 3 cuts:
- 1st cut: Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz) saying "Lucy, I'm Home!"
- 2nd cut: Gabriel (Tim Curry) saying "Lucy, I'm Home!"
- 3rd cut: Grace Nakimura (Leah Remini) complaining to Gabriel about the leather coat.

I've stolen the clip of Ricky Ricardo from this collection.
I haven't been able to find a video with Ricky Ricardo saying "Lucy, I'm home!". Sorry.  :(

GK1-Sierra: When questioning Mosely in his office (close-up), Gabriel has several options to insult (offend) Mosely. One of them is "So how do you ever find anything in this office?", and Mosely replies "Hey, I get my job done! I'm a detective, not Betty Crocker!"

Remake
: It has been preserved.

Betty Crocker
is a brand name and trademark of General Mills. The name was first developed by the Washburn Crosby Company in 1921 as a way to give a personalized response to consumer product questions. There are a lot of Betty Crocker cookbooks published, such as plastic food containers and measuring cups, and a line of small appliances.

I'm from Spain and I don't catch the connection between Mosely's disorder and cooking stuff.

GK1-Sierra: In a room of the secret honfour there are boxes with Voodoo paraphernalia (near to costumes). Gabriel says about it: "Where do these guys get their supplies? Pentagrams-R-Us?". This is an evident reference to Toys-R-Us.

Remake: There's no option to look at Voodoo stuff in the same room. But ..., in the Police Station, if we look at the trash scan, the narrator says "Interesting design for a trash can. Must have been on sale at Cops-R-Us." The design (black snake) of the trash scan is very similar to the snake plaques of the 2 honfours. Is it Gedde zone?

GK1-Sierra: At the Police Station, instead of the trash scan, there's an umbrella stand and not interesting remark when looking at it. The design of the umbrella stand is a red snake. Humm...

GK1-Sierra: Near to the window of the Voodoo Museum, there's a horned figure. When Gabriel looks at it, the narrator says "A wooden doll with horns is on the back table.", and Gabriel adds "Looks like Jack Nicholson." Funny!  :)

Remake: The figure has been removed and the great Jack with it.

GK1-Sierra: At the start of Day 3, when Gracie questions Gabe about his encounter with Malia, Gabriel (Tim Curry) will sing "Are the stars out tonight?" from Frank Sinatra. I've recorded a sound clip by Tim Curry.

Remake: It has been preserved. I've recorded other sound clip by Jason Victor. Is he really singing/saying "Are the stars" at the beginning of the verse?

Thanks to Dr. Bonny Ploeg for the reference.

GK1-Sierra: In St. George's Bookshop, pick up several times a German-English dictionary for know the meaning of words. Eventually, Gabriel will say: "'Drachen' means dragons. I wonder if Mosely would know he was being insulted if I called him 'Drachen breath'."

Remake: It has been preserved.

"Drachen breath" is a nod to King's Quest 7. In Falderal, when Rosella said hello to the mockingbird, he might rudely say, "Hello, dragon breath!"

Nice list of Easter Eggs, but this can't be correct since GK1 was released before KQ7.
Thanks a lot to Rudy Marchant from Sierra Chest for the correction of the evident error.  :-X

Soooo ..., it's only an interesting coincidence!  :)

GK1-Sierra: At the crime scene (Lake Pontchartrain), look at the blood. The dialogue refers to Macbeth (by William Shakespeare), act 5 scene 1, where Lady Macbeth sleepwalks and tries to wash Duncan's blood off her hands.
Specifically, the narrator of GK1 says: "Out, out, damned spot! Will these pristine banks n'ere (never) be clean again?"; and Lady Macbeth: "Out, damned spot! ..., ..., ..., What, will these hands ne'er be clean?"
The humankind's enthusiasm for the "gore" goes back a long way!

Remake: It has been removed. When Gabriel looks at the blood, the narrator doesn't open his mouth; and Gabriel only says: "Ugh. That's a lot of blood."

Thanks to Dr. Bonny Ploeg for the reference.

GK1-Sierra: Must call twice or more to the telephone number 535 1237 (Cazanoux, S). A woman answers: "Cazaunoux residence, may I help you?"; Gabriel says: "I'm calling from the Dixieland Drug Store. You've won a prize."; and the woman replies: "Mmmm-hmmm, and I suppose you're Ed McMahon. Stop calling me!".

Remake: It has been preserved. But now the phone number is 555 0123 and the person who answers is a man.

Ed McMahon made a series of Neighborhood Watch public service announcements parodying the surprise appearances to contest winners that he was supposedly known for. (In fact, it is not clear whether the company McMahon fronted, American Family Publishers, regularly performed such unannounced visits, as opposed to Publishers Clearing House and its oft-promoted "prize patrol".)

GK1-Sierra: Magentia Moonbeam tells Gabriel about "Queen Tabitha" 3 times. The most curious:

Gabriel
: "How did you get into this business?"
Magentia: "I trained in the Voodoo arts for many years with the great Queen Tabitha."
Gabriel: "Really? Who's she?"
Magentia: "You have never heard of her? For shame! I can see you know little of the world of magic!"

Remake
: The 3 references have been exactly preserved.

"Queen Tabitha" is a character from Thumbelina (a 1994 American animated film). She is the winged fairy queen and uses a magic wand.

Is it a deliberate reference or an amazing coincidence? I dunno ...

GK1-Sierra: In the library of Schloss Ritter, we can hear the synopsis of 2 books on the occult. They are in the top shelf of the bookcase placed in the center of the wall behind the table. When Gabriel picks up 2 books (twice) of that shelf, the narrator will tell us the summary of the 2 books: Lycantrhopes (werewolves) and Vampirism. Those synopses are an evident reference/spoiler to/of GK2 and GK3.

Remake: They have been exactly preserved and are in the same shelf. But now, instead of picking up the books, we must use them.

GK1-Sierra: At Jackson Square we can hear 3 versions of the popular gospel hymn "When the Saints go marching in": cajun, blues and jazz versions played by the 3 bands. The cajun and blues versions are played all the time, but for the jazz version Gabriel (we) must do some work:
1.- Must buy a Lucky Dog from the vendor.
2.- Must give the Lucky Dog to the tap dancer.
3.- Must ask the tap dancer to do "The Saints"
The tap dancer will ask the jazz band to play "The Saints" and ... voilà!  :)

Remake: It has been preserved. We can hear the 3 versions with better quality. But now there are only 2 bands playing all the time the cajun and jazz versions. So, where is the blues version?
We (Gabriel) must wait until day 3, go to Jackson Square, and ask the jazz band to play the blues version of "Saints go marching in": they'll play it without a murmur.  :D

Note 1: In this folder are the sound clips of the 6 versions, plus the GK2 and GK3 versions. Enjoy!

Note 2: The 8 versions were remixed by Robert Holmes, producer and composer of GK1-Sierra (original) and 20th anniversary (remake).

Note 3: In the soundtrack of the remake from GOG Games there's only the cajun version and the title of the song is "When Sinners Go Marching In.mp3" (35 seconds).

"Car crash" easter egg

GK1-Sierra: At the start of "Day 8" when you leave Schloss Ritter in the car, hold down the space bar as soon as this scene appears. The vehicle will have an accident, so save before trying.

Remake: It has been removed.  :( I found the official confirmation in a thread from Pinkerton Road Forums.
Summary:
Sai_Deschain: I'm wondering something though, is the easter egg of pressing space as soon as you see the screen for Day 8 still active or not?
Katie Hallahan: LOL, unfortunately that one isn't there anymore, Sai.
Sai_Deschain: Oh well, I figure that without all that snow the road conditions might be drastically better
Voodooray: I understand its been replaced with a meteor strike now.

"Punch the mime" easter egg

GK1-Sierra: When the mime is following Gabriel, chat to the mime around 20 times to watch Mr Knight... ahem... lose his cool.

Remake: I don't know if it has been preserved or not.
When the mime is following Gabriel, I've tried these actions:
- To talk to the mime 20 times.
- To talk to Andrew Jackson Statue 20 times.
- To pick up the flowers 20 times.
- To tap all the keys of the keyboard.
- To use the fence 20 times.
- To talk to the walking-woman 20 times
- To talk to the walking-man 20 times.
- To talk to the policeman (chase-scene) 20 times (around 1 hour)
, and it has happened... nothing. :(

By the way, I've discovered that pressing the Z key the FPS (frames per second) are displayed at top left corner of the screen.
