Telltale is gone
« on: October 10, 2018, 10:39:13 PM »
So this happened about twenty days ago, but I just found about it now. Telltale Games...is deaded?!

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JUlDr7EdqQ" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JUlDr7EdqQ</a>

If you intend to watch this whole video, get cozy.

Rest in peace, studio that made a couple of good games. Rest in pieces, studio that laid off almost all of its workers and didn't give them severance pay.

On a related note, wasn't Cesar a Telltale employee? Does anyone know what his status is right now?

Wow, that sucks.  I didn't know this until I read this post.  And that is absolutely horrible that they laid everyone off with no severence and very limited time to be on their health insurance post lay off.

I read there are only a few workers there finishing up a Netflix Minecraft project and that the remaining chapters for the Walking Dead game may be handled by another studio.

Yeah, their last game is another Minecraft project, and they're not finishing The Walking Dead. Just what the fans wanted to hear. At least they have their priorities straight. I know I was dying to see another Minecraft adventure game after how the first one turned out.

Nice sarcasm, bud. ;) Still, yeah, from what little I know about Telltale, that kinda sucks all around. Makes me sorta wonder whether or not Id even be able to get off the ground myself if I ever started a gaming company if this is the reaction that heavily story based games get nowadays... and considering that story is a critical part of my enjoyment of a game or not, and I like emphasizing that... >.>

I don't think the fact that their games are heavily based on stories is the problem here. It's that they can't tell most of their stories well, and that's putting aside the gameplay.

The storytelling was not well-liked for the most part because of the whole "illusion of free choice" problem. No matter how you got somewhere, the general outcome was always the same. Fallout, on the other hand, is not a point-and-click adventure game, but it nonetheless allows your character to be whatever you want them to be, which is more than your typical adventure game can say, and certainly more than any Telltale game can claim to be.

Now, as for the gameplay...from what I recall hearing about their gaming catalog, most of the games were considered too easy (Jurassic Park, among many others), with a couple of outliers that were considered too obtuse (Wallace and Gromit, of all things), with only their Monkey Island and Sam and Max games hitting the "just right" mark that satisfied both old-school and current adventure gamers.
