Erm... sorry, maybe I shouldn't have used that example.

Let's say baking cookies. ;D

If the cookies ends up getting burnt, do you examine why they got burnt, or do you just blame the oven? :P  Either way, they're inedible.

Personally, I don't think it does, but vice versa it means the same thing...:P
(Whether the means justify the end = whether the end justifies the means. )

I don't think the end justifies the means. If I had to copy off someone to ace a test, and I did, it really isn't worth it. I think the means can justify the end though. If I failed a test, but I did my best, I would feel like there were no better means, so my result was acceptable.

Yes, but is it likely that you would fail a test? :P

The means can justify the end.  For example, life itself.  The ultimate outcome is death, so one could ask what's the point of even living?  The means justifies the end because life is about the entire series of events from beginning to end, rather than the end itself.

Anyway, this isn't why I asked the question, but I just wanted to give an example. :P

That is a horrible example, because there is only one end is irrelevant of the means.  Thus, in that case, the means are only justifying the means.  The "end" is irrelevant because that particular "end" isn't a variable.

Again, bad example.  That's the means explaining the end, not justifying it.  If you know they're going to get burned (the "end") you change your cooking method (the "means") and again, we're left with the end justifying the means.

Basically, what I'm saying is that results can justify actions.  Actions can lead to results, but not justify it.  Results are "unjustifiable".

Well, I was assuming that you don't know they would get burnt beforehand (which is usually the case).  If you knew initially or could predict that they would get burnt and still go ahead with it, then the means would justify the end.

You're correct that actions lead to results, but it's more the justification of the result that's the problem. :-\
