Personally, it doesn't matter where I look, my name won't ever show up in any registry thingy, I know what it means obviously because I asked my mom once and yeah it's a mix, anyhow I think I explained it already, so I won't bore you with it again.

Awww, I wanna be bored with it again! ;-D

Seriously though, I haven't seen the explanation to your name in the first place, and I can't get the friggin' search tool to find it. :( Besides, I'm such a dork that nothing concerning etymology will ever succeed in boring me! So Say, can you tell it again or direct me to the previous post? Also, I was wondering how exactly you pronounce your name. Does the 'sayd' syllable have a vocalic sound like the Spanish diphthong ai as I have imagined it to, or rather as the sound of the vowel in the English word say?

???  .....oh yeah, almost forgot! Pleasies? (that seemed to do the trick last time, lol :P)

Well, since I'm too impatient to wait for your response, I guess I'll have a go at it myself. And you did say it was "mixed", so I think I'll take some liberties here!
hmmm......

My only guess for the 'sayd' element of your name is that it's from Arabic. I found this on it:

Quote
Sayd: in the language terminology to mean fish catching or birds' hunting. As a noun, it refers to the name of one protective area, or a refugee settlement.

Sounds a little strange for a girl's name, though. I prefer to think that it comes from the Arabic word sa'id, which means 'lucky' or 'happy'.

The second element, 'mell', is easy enough. It's obviously from the Latin mel, mellis or it's Greek cognate which means, appropriately enough, 'honey'. Honey = sweet, ergo you = sweet. <3

So then, if my deductions are not in error, your full name means either lucky honey or fish-catching honey, lol! ;P

Okay, maybe you should just tell me what it means... ::)

*decides to take the risk of being wrong*

I think it's pronounced Side-mell(that's how the voice in my head pronounces it, and it sounds familiar... ).

*thinks about it*

Well... Neil said that Say pronounced it like "sigh"

OMG... "the voice in your head" ? :D hahahaha that part was the bestestest ;P! lol

Well... Neil said that Say pronounced it like "sigh"

Mm.. well, to be honest it kind of make sense to me? "Side" sounds more like "Sayd" (kinda how Alex calls me lol) and "Sigh" is more like "Say", so, take your pick :P

Neil and a few ones have heard me talking by phone or by skype with them, and the amusing part is that they've always went the first time like "this is who?!..." lol, because everyone (even at work!) tends to say 'Say' as the verb, so when I say it how I say it everyone goes like "...who?" lol, and that's only with Say, go figure if I said 'Saydmell' alright :P, only my close ones, as in my family, close friends, and my bosses ;P say it correctly (or at least I care to make sure they know how to say it! lol)

LOL, omg :P ok I guess :)

ah... the search engine... sometimes I wish I could stab that thing with a spoon!  >:( :P

You're too smart! you remind me of Michael sometimes <3 lol :)

Yes, yes it's the spanish diphtong form, but in english it translates different (that's why everyone has a way to 'figure it out' or a way to say how they pronounce it as it seems :P

???  .....oh yeah, almost forgot! Pleasies? (that seemed to do the trick last time, lol :P)

ahh, the magic word lol ;P

Sayd is not a female name, so there you go, it's actually an arabic male name, it comes from my mom's name as a matter of fact, her name is 'Saydi' (originally Sayd itself, but oh well...) my mom's side (my grandfather) was from there, he actually arrived Venezuelan in his greatest years, and met my grandma here, got married and had 3 girls (among them my mom) there is where my whole 'exotic' features comes from lol :P (plus my weird second last name 'Mistage'), my mom's grandma was also from somewhere else, and it comes to be I have around 90% of european roots

Sayd from what I got told from arabic friends, means leader or somehow someone willing or whatever. I must state that I'm 100% venezuelan at heart even if I don't look like it, I don't speak arabian neither I want to neither I know how to cook stuff of them or such :P

I can make arepas though! :D lol and whatever traditional venezuelan food I may try! (except mondongo that's just freaking disgusting lol :P)

Mell means honey in french actually, and in spanish is Miel, my mom got it from there to actually give it up the meaning of 'sweet' hahaha, what she actually says is sooo ironic cuz sometimes I'm like a bitter-acid lollipop!! :P

So, kinda good guess! :P

So then, if my deductions are not in error, your full name means either lucky honey or fish-catching honey, lol! ;P

Okay, maybe you should just tell me what it means... ::)

I actually like your interpretation out of it 'lucky honey' sounds neat, but truth is I don't really have sit down and try to figure it out how could I 'translate' my name, I hate it when I say my name and noone gets it, that's where Say came from, and as a matter of fact someone said that to me once by mistake and I kept it, it seriously annoys me big time whenever I have to say my whole name noone gets it, and it's horrible the kind of combinations that I've got in my life... I feel like everyone has been renaming me always lol :P

So, that's why I prefer Say, at least is easier to explain than Saydmell, and yet till nowdays I do have to explain it a lot still (as in when I introduce myself in business meetings, new clients, new colleages... work stuff) and the funny thing is that everyone who knows the whole thing, always asks lol :P I'm going to print it out or something!! :)

Well, that was my boring long post :) hope you liked

Phonetically, it would be spelt /saI/.  That's how we translate "sigh," and since that's how I've heard Alex pronounce Say's name, that's how I translated it.

BTW, I love your name, Say.  It just kinda rolls off the tongue, I guess.  And if you're ever feeling down, all you have to do is go "sigh"...then someone says, "what's wrong, Say?"  Ok, I'm probably the only one who found that interesting...I'm going to go now :P

Actually, ever since I found out you were Venezuelan (which was pretty early on) the “voice in my head” has been pronouncing it approximately like 'sigh'. Does that mean I’m a close friend? Please say yes! <3 :-\

ah... the search engine... sometimes I wish I could stab that thing with a spoon!  >:( :P

LOL! Is that what you do when you’re angry with people? I’m not too keen on having blunt objects plunged into my subdermal regions, so I guess I should try especially hard to keep on your good side! :P

You're too smart! you remind me of Michael sometimes <3 lol :)

I may know a lot of useless crap, but I don’t really think that makes me smart per se. But as long as you think so, I’ll be happeh! :pleased:

OMFGUIMPATIENTCOOKIE lol

I’m a cookie? Well in that case-- I’m impatiently waiting for you to eat me! Pleasies? XD ;P

At least I got the language of origin correct. ‘Mistage’ is a cool sounding name, too. I had forgotten that Latin American and Spanish families give their children a second last name from the mother’s maiden name. (That's correct, right?) My second last name then would be ‘Bruining’, and as far as I know I’m 100% European. A Euro-mut, if you will. Half Dutch, quarter English, and some few "pints" of Welsh, French, and German blood. Yet ‘Kevin’ is an Irish name, and I haven’t any consanguineous roots with Ireland at all.

Mell means honey in french actually, and in spanish is Miel, my mom got it from there to actually give it up the meaning of 'sweet' hahaha, what she actually says is sooo ironic cuz sometimes I'm like a bitter-acid lollipop!! :P

Well, both those words are derived from Latin, so I was at least partially correct. In fact, all the Romance Languages get their word for ‘honey’ from the Latin mel, mellis. Spanish miel, Portuguese mel, Italian miele, Roumanian miere, Catalan mel, Occitan (Provençal) mèl. The French is also miel, but maybe your mom took it from an older French root, like from Norman French or something?

Whatever the case may be, you’re still a honey! <3 And like a "bitter-acid lollipop"? WTF lol! Nah, maybe a little bittersweet at times, but if you had never been a little bitter about anything, then you wouldn’t be a real person. ;)

Yes, I can see how annoying that would be. You’ve probably wished on more than one occasion that you had been named something mundane, like María perhaps. Not that María is a bad name, but I think it’s cool that your mother actually put some thought and effort into making your name have meaning. My parents probably just flipped through a book of baby names and the first name their finger stopped on was Kevin. ::)

Hahaha! Yeah, you should print out a bunch of little pieces of paper about the size of a business card with the explanation of your name on it, and then whenever you go to a business meeting you can just pass it around to everyone without saying a word. You’d also need to have a disclaimer on it that reads: “There. Never ask me about it again, ever! Now STFU!!” lol :P

Well, that was my boring long post :) hope you liked

Of course I did! I told you I'm a dork and don't get bored with that kind of stuff. Besides, how could I get bored from anything you say? <3 :D

And if you're ever feeling down, all you have to do is go "sigh"...then someone says, "what's wrong, Say?"  Ok, I'm probably the only one who found that interesting...I'm going to go now

Hahaha, what a cheesy pun! You should have put the ‘cheesy wink’ smiley at the end of it though, because it was cheesy! lol
Like this: all you have to do is go "sigh"...then someone says, "what's wrong, Say?" ;-D

You don't have to leave though! :(

And before I forget, here's what my crappeh name means:

Quote
Kevin: Anglicized form of the Irish name Caoimhín, derived from the older Irish Coemgen, composed of the Old Irish elements coem "kind, gentle, handsome" and gein "birth". Saint Caoimhin established a monastery in Ireland and is the patron saint of Dublin.

So I guess I'm "of noble birth" or whatever. Kinda lame, imho.
