Yonkey:

Well, it turns out it was my software firewall! I use ZoneAlarm, and turning the Local Access setting down to low seemed to do the trick. Though why having both Local and Internet Access to high with dial-up worked fine, but didn't with DSL, I don't really know. Oh, well, the firewall seems to still stealth things quite nicely according to online tests, so it matters not.

I still can't access my AT&T POP e-mail though, but since we'll be dropping the account soon anyway, I suppose it's a non-issue.

I have my Trusted Zone set to Low, and Internet Zone set to medium.

The thing is, you weren't sharing dial-up across a router before, it was plugged directly.  With DSL and a router, you're sharing ethernet over an LAN.  That alone can affect DNS settings, and other network-related protocols (like NetBIOS).

I still don't get why the POP doesn't work.  Perhaps AT&T itself doesn't let you access e-mail if your domain isn't att.net (i.e. a server-side firewall is blocking you).

It's possible on that last... when I try downloading stuff from my AT&T FTP accounts with my FTP program, I get an error "Server policy denies USER command on insecure connection." Looks like I'll have to download my files for porting over dial-up, fooey.

You don't keep a copy of the stuff you upload on your hard disk?  :o

Jeysie

I do keep a backup of all the stuff I upload to my sites at alienharmony.com (since I create the sites on my hard drive anyway before uploading them). But my AT&T stuff consists mostly of random stuff for forum postings and whatnot, so I generally don't bother keeping a backup of any of that.

Ahh ok.  Well, you don't necessarily need FTP access to access an FTP... :sneaky:

Just move all your files to a publicly accessible part of a website, then connect to that website with DSL and download it all file by file.  It's still tedious but at least it'll be faster than downloading by dial-up.

Well, technically the only way I can do that with this particular FTP setup is to create and upload an HTML file that would link to all the files. Might be possible to work with...

Usually, if they block, they block the outgoing (SMTP) mail server, but not the incoming (POP) one. For example, I can receive mails from an account at a provider I've already abandoned a long time ago, but I can't use their server to send messages. Ofcourse, the sending part is now a non-issue, since TB/Linux only uses one SMTP-server. :-\
BTW, router overhere works fine, AFAIK. 8)

Because I'm feeling temporarily egotistical, I've decided to resurrect my thread with a quirky challenge.

Each of you may ask me one question, and I'll answer it to the best of my abilities within what the forum rules allow. ;P

Have you heard of the Doobie Brothers!

Bit of a "yes" or "no" that one!

When cities burn and armies turn,
and flee in disarray,
Cowards will cry 'tis best to fly
and fight another day.
But warriors know it in their marrow when they die and fall,
It is better to have fought and lost than not have fought at all.

Jeysie

Sounds vaguely familiar... are they a band or comedy act?

Peace & Luv, Liz

Shadowfax

Its a band (not one that I am a particular fan of but its just that is a question I am infamous for asking if anyone wants me to ask a question to test their general knowledge!)

Ah. Fair enough. ;D

What have you been up to lately?  I haven't seen a lot of forum posts from you in quite a while.  :-\

Jeysie

Is that your question? ;)

I've just been mostly tired, sometimes busy. Plus I haven't really had much I've wanted to contribute to lately.

Questing Character

Hmmm.....my question is.....what question should I ask? :P (You have to answer it after you suggest it, 'cause I'm not allowed to ask two...)

Louisiana Night

When you first heard Leonardo's (from TMNT) name on the cartoon, was the first thought that came into your mind "Leonardo da Vinci"(excuse spelling)? :P

Jeysie

Louisiana: Yes. Partly because I know they were all named after artists, partly because I've been familiar with Da Vinci for a long while, and partly because there weren't any other famous Leonardos back in the 80s...

Questie: I'll answer yours when I get home. :)

Jeysie

Did I say when I got home? I meant when I got home plus a week. :P

I think that you, Questie, being the theater fan that you are, should ask me what my favorite musicals are. And I should tell you that my two fave musicals are:

1. Man of La Mancha

Being the pessimistic idealist that I am, I can empathize with Don Quixote's crazy quest to return to the ages of idealistic chivalry and do glorious deeds... all the while pissing off/mystifying all the people who know that all the chances for glory are gone, and no good deed goes unpunished. Yet, he still manages to see the good in people, do some good, and gain a little glory after all... isn't that all any of us can ask?

QuoteHail Knight of the Woeful Countenance
Knight of the Woeful Countenance
Wherever you go
Faced with the foe
They will quave at the sight of the Knight of the Woeful Countenance!
O valorous knight
Go and fight for the right!
And battle all villains that be
But oh when you do
What will happen to you
Thank God I won't be there to see...

2. Annie, Get Your Gun. The story of a strong, independent woman who's the match for any man in skill, but finds that because of that skill she can't get the man of her dreams to fall for her. Something tells me I can relate to that. :P Plus the songs are just fun. The classic "There's No Business Like Show Business", the "no, no sexual tension there!" "Anything You Can Do", the delightfully risque "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly", and my personal favorite...

QuoteA man's love is mighty
He'll even buy a nightie
For a gal who he thinks is fun
But they don't buy pajamas
For pistol packin' mamas
And ya can't get a hug from a mug with a slug
Oh ya can't get a man with a gun!
