Both should be capable of reading DVDs, but not writing DVDs. :-\

Then again, nobody has the money to buy either format's writing drives. :P

DVD drives cost as little as $30-40 australian...   that's $25-30 US....   it's cheap as!   GET ONE PEOPLE!   :P

Here, they cost about $40 (a DVD burner is about $90), but I still won't be buying one anytime soon because

a. I have no games/programs on DVDs (Ok, that's no entirely true. I have one... but I won't buy a DVD player just so I can run the .NET tutorial) and my computer is too slow to run movies properly.

b. I have higher priorities to spend my money on. One of them is buying a screen (Which is more costly than a DVD, but also a bit more essential to the computer's operation).

To answer dew7 from the previous page, I know that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drives will play DVDs.  Those two are the most likely candidates to 'replace' DVD in the future.

As for the poll, even though a lot of us own DVD drives (including myself) I think the problem is still relatively low market penetration compared to how prolific CD-drives are.  There are some special edition DVDs of games (like the Sims 2) just coming out now.  But those are limited edition, for the hardcore gamers.

Hmmmm I wouldn't say hardcore gamers a such, just gamers that know the CD version has 4 bloody CDs! I was so shocked when i opened the box today to find a rainbow of CDs waiting for me inside, wish I'd forked out the extra for the DVD version now.

Oh and I agree with the point about DVD drives not being as widespread as CD drives. 5 years time and things may be very different mind.
