if everyone was optimistic, there would be too many smiles.  all of the smiles would make people like me go insane.  pessimism stops that.  i'm not saying that insanity is bad.

Optimism doesn't make people oblivious to sad things, it just allows them to conquer them.

Well said. Pessimism doesn't balance out optimism; it simply detracts from it. I believe optimism is our natural state, which is then taken over by cynicism as we witness some of the horrors and disappointments of life. Becoming cynical and pessimistic is like succumbing to the dark side of life. Optimism conquers the darkness.
