King's Quest

I've heard that at one time, King's Quest was the most popular game series out there. I've also read that when KQV was released it shattered all previous sales records for computer games and became the highest selling pc game of all time (until Myst). If all this is true, then King's Quest was very popular, and I've also read that when MOE came out King's Quest was still very popular (though not the staple it once was) and that the reason it didn't sell was because fans didn't consider it a true KQ. And then, from my reading, the popularity of King's Quest faded afterward and kq was forgotten (by the mainstream audience). But now it seems, people have much more renewed interest in King's Quest, with all the fan games and even this new omnipedia. Is it just me or is the popularity of the King's Quest series growing popular again?

It depends on the sites you visit.  Pretty much everyone that visits our site knows about some game in the King's Quest series.  I can tell because many visitors come from search engine traffic, with search terms of "king's quest", "king's quest 9", etc.  The KQ Omnipedia actually just started last week, but it has really taken off! 8)

I think the Adventure genre in general is starting to regain a bit of momentum at the moment, especially in the handheld section of the console market. The latest development has seen a port of SCUMM to the Ninteno DS and the PSP is now able to run pretty much any system upto the N64/PSX so before long we'll be seeing many many old school adventures popping up on handhelds. Developers simply cant ignore this and I predict that the adventure genre will have a mini resurgence.

Nintendos first Adventure game for the DS was released not long ago actually, which has been getting pretty good reviews. Konami has also got an adventure/survival game coming up called Lost in Blue which is also a promising sight. Hey one day all the old adventure games could be released on DS, after all it has the perfect input method and would follow the trend of ports thats emerged with the two current handhelds.

yeah, the DS can do all the old ones, and the Revolution will make adventure games easy to do on a console as well.  Cause let's face it, KQ5 on the original NES just didn't get it right . . . at all.

but now the input style is changing, and interest in the genre is as well . . .
personally, i think Vivendi is rereleasing all the old games to test the waters of this new interest, but i'm worried what effect that might potentially have on fan games such as our beloved KQIX . . .

I think it would only boost the project tbh. Think for a sec, if you were a major company trying to keep costs to a minimum would you rather employ a 100+ team of people to create a game that would be released in a years time (probably longer) or authorise a high quality and heavily developed project such as this for an official release?

Seeing as vivendi has no qualms about who makes a game and what happens to that brand as long as it makes them money then it would most probably be a very good thing.

I seriously think that if KQIX was advertised on TV, or in a gaming magazine (or multiple gaming magazines for that matter) then MANY people would download the game for sure.. I think the reason that the game is not growing popular as fast as it was during the realease of KQ5 is that there is no Advertisement... I actually found this site by luck on the search engine  ;D

The best advertisement is one that people make and not one that a company makes   ;)

I agree.. but I also think that if they put the trailer they just came out with on TV a lot of ppl would play this game, even my friend who hates the KQ series said that he wanted to play it after seeing the trailer..

But the thing is no (or almost no) channel will want to advertise something for free. So the best way i see it is to "tell" about the game though internet and printed medias. But like i said, when people talk about it, it's worth more the Phoenix Freeware talking about it unless its an interview. ;)

Maybe this site can get a Sponsor or something, If there are many users and people look at the site frequently then maybe they could get a sponsor and they get money from the sponsor to make a commercial and all they have to do is advertise their sponsor.. :P just an idea though...

Raforever

but then they would have to advertise him then which in turn would mean in game propaganda as in the Introduction and other places. I dont think they (the team and/or fans) would like it although it does sound nice money and comercially wise

To make a TV commercial, it costs thousands of dollars depending on where and when you show it.  Most sponsors would not want to do this unless they get something out of it as well, and given that our project is free, they won't get much. :P

They'd get the fans' awe and appreciation for the KQIX team at doing something so amazing.
