Why Called King's Quest 9?

I know that most people think of Mask Of Eternity as King's Quest 8 but the fact is the game (if you actually look at the title) is: "Roberta William's King's Quest (in small print) then in big title letters: Mask Of Eternity."  MOE was a spin off of the king's quest world, obviously not the next in the King's Quest series because it did not involve a royal family member as the main character (hence the name King's Quest because the quest is done by a member of the royal family).
Putting aside all that, if you already knew this why is it called king's quest 9?  Is it because people know MOE as KQ8?  Thanks, always wondered about that in the back of my head.

King's Quest 8: MoE is considered King's Quest by some, and not by others. As far as I am aware, quite officially from Sierra's (Now Vivendi Universal's) point of view, MoE is quite an official part of the King's Quest series. Also if you look at the cover for the game, atleast the one we got where I live, it says KINGS QUEST with huge letters, then it says "8" and then it says "MASK OF ETERNITY".. I'm assuming that's all a part of the reason behind why the team is calling it King's Quest 9. Otherwise it's simply commonly thought of as the 8th title in the King's Quest series wether you like it or not, but still a part of it. I hope this answers your question, I can't give specific answers to why the team chose it, I'm merely speculating, but perhaps someone else with this info will see the thread and respond. :)

Thanks for the welcome!
That's weird!  I don't have my box anymore but everywhere in the game that has a title (including the preloader that has the german box pic) there's no 8!  The vagueness is strange, but whatever number it is, it's going to rock out the house.

Hi, just thought I'd add that on the back of the box it includes MOE as part of the series. Take a look Clicky

Here's a video about Mask Of Eternity. I hope this can solve the mystery... And if the mystery is already solved please don't hurt me. ;) Clicky <--- I know that this is the wrong way to do it but I'm not sure how to make it so the word: "Clicky" is hyperlinked to this. ??? ???

LMAO "clickyfied" :P

We didn't call this game King's Quest 8, because we are including events that happened in MoE into KQIX's plot.  And as stated, some people consider MoE to be the 8th game in the series and some don't, so in order to avoid confusion we chose to call our game KQIX.  8)

I think somewhere in the movie I attached it shows someone saying something like, "I know that this isn't alot like the other King's Quests." I don't really know I'd have to check.

The game was called Mask of Eternity for marketing reasons. They were aiming for a larger audience where many people had not played the previous installments of the series, so they figured many people would not buy a game that was part 8 in a series they had not played any previous game in. That probably explains much of why it is so detached from the rest of the series as well. Also, Roberta wasn't as involved in the making of the game as she had been with previous King's Quests.

Yeah, might have to pop over to ken and roberta's site and post a question in the forum to see what their take on the titling was.  But you are right, marketing definately had a lot of control over this game and it's image.  I wouldn't be suprised if this was a topic that even the employees were confused about.
