The Knight: Select the file(s) you want, then go to "File-Convert Files(s)" in the menu. If you selected only one file, just pick your directory, WAV format, and filename, and hit "save". If you selected more than one file, choose the directory and format, then choose either "Use resource file title" or the custom name option. ("Use audio file title" never seems to work right for me, anyway.)

Incidentally, in order to have a quick-loading set of files to double-check the conversion details with, I loaded up the resource.sfx file from KQ6 just for the heck of it. And I noticed while listening through it that there's several files with the intro lines done with alternate voice actors. And, well, um... let's just say that it's pretty obvious the actors were some of the Sierra programmers and writers and such...

The Knight:
Okay, I load up the Resource.aud file.  But the only thing I can extract to WAV is the entire resource.aud file.  I only want certain audio inside the file.  How do I indicate which audio in the resource.aud file I want?

Jeysie:
OK. You might know some of this already, but I'll be thorough just to be on the safe side.

When you open GAP, you should call up the playlist screen, choose "Scan files", then pick the file(s) you want to get wavs from. After the program is finished scanning (might take a while if it's a really a big file, or lots of smaller ones), you should see a listing of many files with "Unknown" for the title, followed by some of the info about that file. (The time stamp is pretty much the only other thing you're gonna want to worry about.) Go through the files using the little play, rewind, fast forward, and stop buttons. When you find one or more files you like, click on the title of them with your mouse to select them (using control-click or shift-click to choose more than one). Then follow the instructions in my previous post.

Incidentally, I'm using the latest version of GAP, which is 1.32... if you have an earlier version you might want to download the newest one and give that one a try.

The Knight:
Thanks.  I'll have to extract some of the voices now.  YIPEE!

oldbushie:
I wonder why they threw in so many extraneous sounds? Was it just to fill up the CD and leave a little something for people like us to find?

BoardnationArchive

Jeysie:
Well, some of the alternate takes for lines that have them are actually used, although you'd probably not consciously notice if you weren't listening for it.

As for the rest of it... my educated guess would be that they finish all the recording way before everything else is done, and get the files packed together. Then for some reason or another some files end up not being used, and since there's plenty of room on the CD(s) it's just easier for them to leave the extra files in there and just not link to them, rather than trying to pick them out. That explanation makes sense to me, anyway... whether or not it's true I don't know.

If you really want a trip, try listening to Space Quest 4 & 6's .aud files. SQ4 has it's own fair share of extraneous lines, while SQ6 has a ton of lines that are all scratchy for some reason... it's pretty weird. There are some non-Sierra games I know of that have extra lines, too... in fact, I'd bet most games with voice have at least a few.

Akril:
Ah...a fellow GAPper. I've browsed through many Sierra game resource.aud files, and compiled several lists showing which areas the wav files come from (yes, I have too much free time), for SQ4 and 6, KQ6 and 7, and Larry 6 and 7.

I've gotten pretty frustrated, because LSL6, SQ6, and KQ7 (especially the last two) have an inordinate amount of horrendously staticky wav files, which really bites, because there's a lot of wav files that aren't featured in the games that I'd really like to preserve for posterity (i. e., SQ6, when Roger is trying to escape Sharpei the brainbot by climbing the conveyor belt, there's a sound byte of him practically yelping "I guess she wasn't kidding about escape being a futile thing!" instead of the monotone remark he makes in the actual game. And it's so scratchy, I can barely hear it!)

I just don't know if there's any way of getting "clean" forms of these messy sounds. If there isn't, I'm sure disappointed. I mean, look at all the cool stuff those Lucasarts hackers have at their fingertips to snoop around in their games! You can rip walking animations without having to press printscreen an infiniate number of times, and if you want an midi, you can just find it in the resource file and save it! No big deal! It just seems soooo unfair...

The Knight:
I have the same problem with those games.  It really bums me out.  Hopefully someday it there will be a way to get those files without the terrible quailty.

BoardnationArchive

Jeysie:
Akril: Actually, we Sierra fans do have some resource-digging options to play with. AGI Studio and SCI Studio might be meant for making games, but they work perfectly well on Sierra's early games for dissecting existing ones, at least in terms of the art and words. (Still no ideas on MIDI, I'm afraid.) And development on SCI Studio VGA apparently is going well, which will make the later Sierra games dissectable, too, when it's released. (rubs her hands together excitedly in anticipation)

As for the GAP lists... uh... is there any way you can e-mail them to me? The SQ6 and KQ7 ones would be awfully handy for my Many Deaths stuff, the LSL ones might help out the fellow doing those deaths, and the others would just be neat to have. If there's anything you can think of I might be able to offer in return, I'd be willing to try and come up with something.

The Knight:
I got some already made playlists off the GAP website.  They have some for Gabriel Knight 1 & 2, King's Quest 7 & MOE.  And A few other games as well.

BoardnationArchive

Jeysie:
Yes, but the problem with those lists is that all they do is show which files in a game have audio... they don't have any notes marking which WAVs are which lines in the game or anything, which is what I would find useful. Unless I downloaded the wrong set of lists...

Just try to get this out of your head:

That's why you shouldn't play King's Quest on acid :P

It's like with an old DVD player of mine. If the tape happened to be bad, it just kept repeating the last line or stopping completely.  :P
