Hello everyone!

I've just found out today that Vivendi has signed off on KQ IX, it's so cool it's awesome! :D So a big hello to all of you that managed to start this amazing thing that is KQIX! ;D

I'm a programmer by trade, by the way, have been professionally for the last (eek!) 9 years. My background is in C/C++ though I've been doing a lot of C# and scripting languages these last few years.

I've played around with the Torque Engine a bit, and I was planning on acquiring a license but didn't because they were coming out with the new version and I was in dire need of a new machine, which is all done now (amd athlon ;D :D ;D) (my laptop is not really suited for graphic-related development)... which brings me to my main topics: what version of Torque are you using for the game?

I'm interested in joining the programming team, I see you have some positions available, but seeing as my line of work is not game-related, I'm a bit at a loss as which position I should apply... (yes I know I should send a resume over to you, but this quick message is so much simpler and direct... I can send it your way but it'll take a bit more time, have to update it first :p) ... so I thought it would be better to just ask :)

Welcome shana! ;D

Since it sounds like you have a strong background in C++, I suggest applying for the Engine Programmer position.  We're using Torque Game Engine.  Currently we're using version 1.3.0 but I believe the programming team is in the process of trying to upgrade it to version 1.4.  We're also using the Synapse Lighting Pack which hasn't been upgraded to version 1.4 yet.

I also highly suggest having a look through some of the Torque tutorials out there, to get a bit more acquainted with it before you apply. :)

Thanx for the welcome :D

I'm gonna get the new version of Torque then, and play with it some more. This is such a completely differente dev environment for me, I feel like a noob all over again  ;D

From the positions descriptions I gather that you're using the Torque scripting language and not some other like Lua, right?

And btw, what compiler do you use? VC++, or a gnu port? I haven't yet "upgraded" to VisualStudio 2005, still on 2003, I still have 2002 laying around somehere, and maybe some older than that, and I've got mingw and cygwin as well... and the new watcom is around here somewhere... and IBM's VisualAge C++... ROFL! way too much stuff! :p

I'l shut up now  ::)

Yeah, Torque takes a while to get used to and there is still a lot that we don't understand or care to, since it doesn't really involve this game. :P

And yes, we're using Torque Script for the scripting.  The IDE we use is Visual Studio.NET 2003. :)

Yonkey

It's written in both C++ and TorqueScript.

Hello everyone, my name is Diego, and I'm from Colombia and I basically program since I was 10 in various programming languages, ranging from QBasic to Assembler, and well, I also include C/C++ in it's various shapes (depending on the builder, also Visual C++ included there). I love programming small games... which of course never see light, but it's because I suck at anything other than engine programming.

I was looking at the references for programmers, and I saw that you also need some Torque experience. I checked some information on GarageGames to see which was the cheapest way to aquire a license, because I am REALLY interested in joining the team. I'm basically free every afternoon after 16:00 (that's EST for the US), and I'm really good at learning new languages... and torque doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary, maybe a small variation of C++.

Whatever, the point is, what is the cheapest license I could get? You have some experience on this, so I'm basically asking for help to join.

Welcome Diego! ;D

The cheapest and only license you need is the Indie license for Torque Game Engine 1.5.x, which costs $150 USD. :)

Interesting... will this position still be available in the aproximatted two months it'll take to get the program AND master it?

It should stay open for at least that long, but I can't guarantee it will.

At least.

Also I wouldn't say that you need to be a master of Torque to join the team.  It'd certainly be nice, but I'd be just as interested in someone that's able to learn on the fly what's needed and is able to meet deadlines.

And as you suspected TorqueScript is basically a much more flexible version of C/C++.  If you know C/C++ it's really easy to pretty much jump right in.

I have decided since the forum hack that I would like to join the team.  My hours will be limited due to my work load but I would love to help Neil and others in the web security aspect of the forum and in any other areas involving computer security.  After my faith and working with kids, computer security is my passion.
