Silver Lining download questions

There may already be a thread about this somewhere else, but I was really curious as to how this game is going to be available for download.  Theoretically, wouldn't a game this large (I read in another post that it had something like 2 or 3 gigs of data) be impossible to download in a reasonable amount of time?  What about people with slower connections?  Also, please say that you guys will not be using one of those obnoxious pay file sharing sites, where suscribing is the only way to get a fast enough download speed to reasonably get the file that you want.  If you guys are hosting the game download from this website or domain or whatever, how are you guys looking for bandwidth limitations?  Just curious about all of these things.  Will there be some sort of hard copy mailing option for people with dial-up connections?  Some light on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again for all your work!

Yonkey knows about bandwith. I think that the team got some new server or something that involved bandwith although I forget right now.... ::)

I believe that 2 or 3 gigs was an estimate of the whole game, making Part One around 1 gig.  However, we're still not sure exactly how large or small the game will be.  I think it will be far less, but we'll only know for sure once we're closer to the release date.

Even with the extra bandwidth we have on this server, it most likely won't be enough to host the whole game here.  We'll have to split the game into several pieces and put them on different servers and sites.  I'm not sure if we would be allowed to make hard copies of the game or not, so dial-up users may have no choice but to be prepared for a huge download.  All the sites would have the ability to pause and resume the files when downloading. :)

It would be awesome if VU could help to host it, but right now that's just wishful thinking. :P

Yonkey when you say 1 Gig
do you mean one gig of memory,
or one gig of hard drive space?

Lambonius

cool thanks for the info...and i'm pretty sure yonkey means HD space.

Yonkey

No problem.  And yes, hard drive space. :)

Maybe the speech pack can be a separate download from the game.

I just hope the server will be okay.

I remember when I tried to download the demo for The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth II, and the wait!

It was a 1.36 GB file. When I went to download it, it was downloading at 10KB/S. There was a 36 hour wait to download it! So terribly long!  >:(

I'm sure it won't be as bad here. Well, it'd better not be.

I have a fine broadband connection, but it's for nothing if the server is bad.

Have you considered using torrents?

Yonkey

Yes.  Torrents are definitely something we will consider using. :)
