A couple of things:

1. "The Sorcery of Old" only states that that spell doesn't wear off, not that it can't be removed.

2. Both Mordack AND Crispin said that the spell can only be removed by the one who cast it - Alexander.

From the "Fragments of the Sorcery of Old" (Author Unknown), in King's Quest Companion;

"Note The cookie thus created will turn whomsoever eats it into a feline forever; however this is a difficult assertion to prove. No records have ever been discovered, indicating the spell has ever worn off.
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

Mordack kidnapped Alexander and his family to get him to remove the spell.  If Alexander studdied amgic and learned more of sorcery, he might find out how to remove the spell, of course he certainly would not want too. I think being turned into a cat is a reward, not a punishment. I am the loyal servant of a cute, mischievous calico shorthair, I love her. Cats don't have owners they have staff. Cats can survive on their own, but the smart ones pick an animal-loving human to live with and take advantage of, they live a life of luxury being waited on by their humans, and they get to sleep all day. And some of them get to go out at night and prowl around, have fun with other cats, chase rats, mice and birds, party in the neighborhood at night. I love cats, cats rock!

...Or, they live with mean wizards that have servents that kick them...

LOL

But ya cats aren't nearly as good as humans... Cats lose alot of abilities, they can't cast spells, they can't read, they can't utilize human equipment. They can't communicate with humans anymore(unless of course someone has magical white snake or equivalent). Compared to being a human being turned into a cat is a horrible thing.

Yeah, you're right, if I were a cat I wouldn't be able to read, draw, write stories and poems, go to places like the mall and theme parks or church, couldn't surf online, watch TV and movies ( well cats sort of can watch TV, but do they understand what's going on? I couldn't play adventure games or board games or card games, couldn't cook or eat out in restaraunts, or wear nice clothes and jewelry, couldn't put on music, or talk to people, have interesting conversations. There's a lot you can't do. The little female black cat in KQVII could talk.

I think the KQ series is prejudiced agaisnt cats. In KQ V you save a rat from a cat. I hate rats, they are disgusting, filthy, disease-carrying vermin. They carry diseases, it was fleas on the rats that causes the Bubonic plague. Cats do us a favor by hunting and killing rats. My cat used to go outside and kill rats, and lizards, I wish she wouldn't kill the lizards they are good, they eat bugs. i was upset when I found out she had killed a cardinal, they are beautiful birds I like them.  In KQVII there is a toy rat, and the gravedigger's rat. I prefer cats to rats, I also like dogs, but I think I like cats better.

Back on topic, Manannan probably hates being a cat, he can't use magic anymore, or talk, or order Gwydion/Alexander around.  I wonder why he did not attack Alexander with scratching and biting after being turned into a cat. Perhaps he was shocked and embarrassed?  There are some cool wild felines in the KQ series, like the lion guarding the door to Valanice's room in the crystal tower in KQII, and Genesta's pet snow leopard, and the tiger that King Graham transforms into in KQV.

Actually, Manannan CAN talk as a cat. He won't talk to you in KQ3, but talk to him in KQ5 and he'll demand to know who you are before running off to get his brother. Scared me the first time I did it. XD

But is whitesnake required?

Good point, but probably not. Mordack might've found a way to let him speak normally in addition to cat-noises. :P

He was able to talk to Graham because of the white snake according to the companion and other strategy guides.

Otherwise cat cookie cats just make hissing and meow noises, like any other cat.

A similar thing occured in King's Quest 3. Without magic dough all Alex could hear was cat hiss, and snarl. But with magic dough he could hear what the cat was saying.

Manannan's cat was also product of a Cat Cookie, and one of Manannan's old rivals.

In some defense of rats, while they shouldn't live in human establishments, where they certainly are a pest, they do have a beneficial use out in the wild. They keep other vermine down, like cockroaches, mice, and other nasty insects. Other vermin that could potentially make their homes in human abodes....

Circle of life, and everything has its place and use.

Also rats are actually fairly clean, like cats they wash themselves. A pet caged rat is probably cleaner than a pet cat, in that the cat may go outside, and can carry in all manner of vermin (worms, fleas, ticks, etc).

As for bubonic plague, it wasn't just carried by fleas on rats... The flea that carries the plague can be found on a variety of different rodents including, squirrels and chipmunks...

It is believed that more than one kind of plague hit during the middle ages, other forms including an airborne variety, "pneumonic plague", and was human to human transmission(dirty humans,  ;) )...

Also in some locations so called plague might have been caused by anthrax spores, which could have been ingested by eating beef...
