I played KQ6 on XP myself.  I didn't have any luck getting the window's version to work.  What I did, is installed the windows version anyway.  Then I opened up the command prompt.  Then I used cd to get to my installation directory C:\SIERRA\KQ6CD\ and then I typed 'install6'  This will install the DOS version of KQ6.  For Music, I belive you need to choose General MIDI sound driver if you can.  I installed it with Sound Blaster at first, but the sound didn't work for me.  Audio, you can leave as Sound Blaster.  The other install options should be ok.  After installation, you should be able to run the program by typing 'kq6cd'.

Hope this helps :)

I forgot to add that this post pertains to the King's Quest Collection CD.  If your game is for windows only, I have not figured out how to get KQ to run with windows yet :(

This website might be able to help you install KQ on to a Windows XP machine.  It gives general installation instructions for all DOS games, but the author notes he got KQ 1 through 6 to work on his computer.
