The Making of the Silver Lining at 4:37 shows the "magic" map with a ship sailing around it.  The ship is being led by a pair of footsteps, which Yonkey pointed out earlier is the walk cursor.  So it appears that, in this game, the map is not magic at all, but is being used for continuity only.  Since a ship is required to navigate the Green Isles, it seems reasonable that one would have to be at the shore or a dock in order to use the map.
Who said that this was the magic map? ;) :suffer:

Well, the map looks exactly like the magic map, except that the title "Land of the Green Isles" is in a slightly different place, and there is a picture of a mermaid and a couple of other pictures that were not on the original magic map.  I suppose that it is possible that there is a separate magic map.  However, since the two look so similar, I think that it's unlikely that Phoenix would have two separate interfaces that look almost the same.  Besides, with the ferries in operation, there is really no need for a magic map.

You're right about the ferry being in operation. I guess I can reveal that the interface you see there is for travelling to the island of your choice. The little ferry shows the journey. It's not really needed for the gameplay I guess but it's kind of fun to play with. :)

Do you mean that the interface is not needed for gameplay?  That suggests a couple of possibilities:  Either you use the ferry to travel among the islands, but you watch the journey from the perspective of a passenger inside the ferry (like PQ2), or else there is a magic map or some other form of magic to travel among the islands.

Or he might have ment that they could have just made the game so that you told the ferryman where you want to go and you'd see a tiny cutscene and you are there.
All that is gold does not glitter
Not all who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither
Deep roots are not touched by the frost

From the ashes a fire shall be woken
A light from the shadows shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that was broken
The crownless again shall be king

That's basically what I meant when I said that you'd watch the journey from the perspective of a passenger inside the ferry.  You'd see a cutscene, but from the perspective of a passenger inside the ferry rather than from an overhead view.  But, in that case, when would you use the map to navigate.  Perhaps you have the option of controlling the ferry youself?  And, if so, why would you do so?  Could that be an alternate scenario where the ferryman refuses to take you where you want to go, or the ferryman is captured by an enemy?  Or are you just in a bad mood and decide to take over control of the ferry yourself?

Since we are speculating on the plot here, perhaps we should continue this discussion in the Plot section.

The interface will be used for "Daventry Online" the Massively Multiplayer Online Adventure Game (MMOAG), to be developed after the release of The Silver Lining ;).

Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

Oh, great. I can just imagine Graham leaning over the front of the ferry as it sets sail, announcing "I'm the king of Daventry! Woo-hoo!"
Once the votes are read, the decision is final. The person voted out will be asked to leave the Tribal Council area immediately. I'll read the votes...
