I've been wondering. If adventure games were to take a new path. What would be the best way for them to go? How could someone modernize adventure games without upsetting adventure fans? ( ex. KQ8 )

Or would it be best if Adventure games stayed 3rd person, point and click... forever?
Believe everything you hear. Its all true... Trust me.

I like a lot either way you know, I've played many games in 3rd person by now that perhaps I'm more used to it to it, but 1st person is awesome too, even more when they got elaborated inventory and stuff.
As long as It gets to be a nice adventure i don't mind how I guess  ;)

Thats a question the KQ9 design team has been asking themselves since we started.  With KQ9 we want to try to bring adventure gaming to a new level but the real question is how do you do that?  Are you obligated to use a 3rd person KQ MOE type camera, how do you make the interface, what elements of the old games truly made them the way they are.  So many questions, and as we experiment and see what works what does not, we'll define what we consider new age adventure gaming.  Needless to say its one of our main concerns in developing our game.

One thing I know is that I think 3D techonology is only now and barely at that coming to a point where it could make a good KQ.  I found that Mask of Eternity suffered from primitive graphics, even for the time, and in order to make a KQ truly worthy of being called KQ you would need to use an engine that truly creates a massive world and the only engine presently out there I would see doing that is the Dark Age of Camelot engine but even then we would be better off waiting for Everquest 2 or DAOC 2, those engines I have heard kick ass.

when I started here I had the feeling that you might use a 3d engine anyways, nowdays it has became so appealing for everything not only adventure games, but to any kind of game.
and when it comes to 1st or 3rd person I guess only graphics won't save a quality's game, it depends on so many things I think.

It's about a balance, a game with the best technology and with no meaning or anything is just so insignficant as a good good one that's not very well designed I guess.

You could make the game console orientated...but I doubt that- although PS2, Xbox, and Game Cube's graphics engines are very advanced, they are also very hard to program- especially with a common pc or workstation...
Where's your bread at...

Storm is damn right, a good game should have it all, and not just focus in one single thing, and yes, I do think too that the most nice and popular games are usually a good balance among the needs of what it takes a cool game.
Hey I've heard once about this fandango game, is it cool?? what is it about??

I don't know what it is like in other places, but I've kept an eye on computer game stores and the Adventure Gaming Genre is almost dead, if non - existent. THe only thing left is like : "Monkey Island"(the newest version).
I don't know why people don't like adventure/role playing games! :-[
I had always thought they were fun!
I understand that NOW the old KQs and those type of games are technically aged, but why are all the new things comin' out all combat and strategy games like:
"Heros IV," "Diabolo II," "Age of INvasions....etc..etc.."
I'm not saying I don't like them! ON the contrary....
But adventure games have their own beauty too! And I just Can't figure why people don't seem to go for them ???
MAbe it's just Australia!(Mabe it's just ME). :)
"What was it when I looked at you?
What power has chained me through and through?..."
Guess where that came from! All you KQies

Say

wow, well now that you mention it is true!!, lately adventure has been something like forgotten, all you can get is strategy games or something, and is not the same.
Im not such like "a big fan" of adventure games, but is true, there should be like more variety about them, I have stoped a bit playing too much pc games, Im into game cube and stuff now and  adventure is not like the most "popular subject" on there either

Oh yeah I also heard that broken sword 3's coming out on all consoles, and settlers 5 is too. There just isnt the same market in PC gaming that there was 5 years ago.

Well right now Im kinda like a gamecube freak, I was all hipnotized with luigi's mansion, then smash bro and now i haven't seen yet mario sunshine but I am SO DYING to play it
I have also seen Spiderman and James bond's games on gamecube and let me tell you... WOW, the graphics are excellent detailed and is like... I dont know to me is just awesome and is like a perfect 3d work or something.
Maybe that's maybe a reason why I left pc games behind, is like there is a new whole world besides pc gaming now and is so much fun to get into it  :)

That's a good point there - why can't computer adventure games have graphics as good as console games like PS2?  ???
aren't todays computers strong enough? and even if they aren't, there must be a way to make them match PS2.

I don't think computers can't have graphics as good as PS2. I think the problem is that computer games don't sell as much as PS2 games do, so PS2 games companies, can allow themselves the extra time and money to make things better, like Squaresoft and... Final Fantasy...

Final Fantasy...... Final Fantasy.... I need news on Final Fantasy XII.... I need.... play.... I need....

Thats not really the problem with PC graphics.  The real problem is hardware.  On a PC you can have a infinite number of hardware setups, and some of your clientele probably cannot run high end programs that push the latest techonology to its limits.  Therefore PC game companies have to accept a game standard that is a year or two behind what the newest stuff can do.  Consoles on the other hand are different.  You know that everyone has the exact same hardware, you know exactly what everyone's machine can do so you can push game to the console's limit and sometimes exceed it.  PCs could match it, the problem is not all PCs.  So using that logic consoles will forever have the advantage over PC games.

well but if they would do something alike, it would be cool as hell though

Well yeah thats always the problem. I still wish that they'd make a game for with two versions tho. Like one for top end graphics and one for low end. Hehe you never now we might even have to do this!

That's right - if you wait for software companies to follow ANY standards, you'll be waiting forever.

So OK, not console graphics, but can't they at least make adventure games that have as good graphics as action games? I think Cesar is also right about that - not enough adventure buyers, so not much investment in good adventure graphics. :(

Personally I don't like consoles at all because they don't have any adventure games. Action games always seem, well, a bit pointless to me.
Also, I don't see why someone who has a computer should spend money on consoles, where you can't even copy games.

However, I did play PS once, and kicked my little brother's ass on this game called Tekken 2, so that I kind of liked because usually he's better than me at games that require hand-eye coordination... 8)

My fav's PS2. FINAL FANTASY!

And, actually, they are making interesting games for PS2. Yes, all of them has some action included, but I guess that you get used to it after a while and start enjooying the story.

Oh well... something to fill the gap of adventures games...
