In KQV, when Crispin is talking about Mordack, he says some things that struck me as odd.

"The society of wizards has always taken a dim view of Mordack and his abuse of his power. Why, he's even been put on suspension a few times."

Is it just me, or do you have to BE in a society to be suspended from it? :P He was mentioned in one Shadrack's letters in KQVI, so we can only assume that he is an actual member of the Black Cloak Society, but doesn't it seem like he was part of the Silver Cloak Society as well? Maybe Mordack wasn't always bad. Maybe he's a spy. Maybe I'm way off. Who knows? :P
I'm a princess even if my kingdom is pixelated.

Maybe the Kings quest world wasn't always perfectly consistent.  :P  After all neither Cloak Society was a twinkle in Roberta's eye when that line was penned.  But several rationalizations explanations could be devised.

A.  Crispen could be talking about a differant, more broadly reaching society.  It is even possible that the Black Cloaks (BCS for future reference) and Silver Cloak (SCS) are two factions left after a schism between Mordack's followers and Crispen's within this all wizard society.

B. As mentioned, Mordack's misdeeds eventually got him kicked out of the SCS and he joined the BCS.

C. Mordack is a spy (or triple agent even) Heck, he could even be a double agent, working for the SCS against the BCS and Crispen's comment is supposed to help him keep his cover.  He could even have kidnapped Graham's family as a way to increase his "tough" reputation with the BCS without any intention of actually killing them, and killing him was a tragic mistake.  :suffer: Or killing them was seen as a necessary sacrifice by the SCS, who really aren't as nice as they seem.  Yes, I've read Dune and a few to many accounts of European power politics, why do you ask.  :P

D. Crispen is going senile.  ;D

Well between KQ5, and the King's Quest Companion this is what's implied, or said, and I paraphrase;

Mordack was orginally in Society of Wizards, until he suspended and cast out for abuse of his powers, and use of dark magic.

Mordack later joined a society that would accept his ways, the Society of the Black Cloak, or as fans call it the "Black Cloak Society".

I also get the impression that the organization known as the "Society of Wizards" is a neutral organization. They seem to allow just about anyone in, just as long as they don't abuse their powers.

So to use DND system, they might let in good, neutral, chaotic good, chaotic neutral, and even neutral evil into their Society, but if those characters start abusing their powers, start utilizing some of the forbidden dark magics, and start making the society look bad, well then they might get booted out of it.

Now some people think that the "Society of Wizards" is the same thing as TSL's Silver Cloak Society. Well I have no idea.

But I have a feeling if it is, it may go against the grain of what the original "Society of Wizards" was meant to be, more of just a Majician's guild.

Also interesting to note according to Alexander, Manannan's pointy hat marked him as a member of the Majician's Guild, which either is the same organization as the Society of Wizards, or yet another one of these magic guilds.
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

"Really?"
"Yep, it's our motto."
