For those that don't know, the latest versions of MSN-Messenger and YIM are compatible with one another. For me, this means I am going to stop using MSN-Messenger almost completely(if I have need of any special features, I'll use the official client).

Now, the bad news. Only the latest versions of both work with eachother. Since I will be moving over to YIM, and to a lesser degree, Gaim soon(1-2 months)... if nobody sees me in MSN, that's why. :P

Now, to the major point of this post... SWITCH TO YIM, THE SUPERIOR MESSENGER(or at least upgrade MSN for the sake of us immigrants to YIM)! XD

Rosella

ROFL! XD

I might just end up with a total conversion to YIM too, so...Yeah. :P

Why exactly is YIM superior? :P Windows Live Messenger does offline messaging, which was the only major reason for me to use YIM in the past. XD

YIM does it better. :P MSN has JUST NOW let you message people while "offline", and leave messages for offline people, and those have been YIM features for ages. And YIM does a better job with it anyway. :P

My only problem with YIM was that I didn't have enough contacts willing to use it at that time.  Oh, and too much BUZZ! abuse. :suffer:  Of course, I wish there were a way to disable Nudge! in MSN too. ;P

BUZZ-ing is less obnoxious than nudges though. :P

And the MSN offline message thing scared me when I logged into MSN on the other computer and got messages from conversations that were like, weeks ago. :P

I don't like things that try to disturb my window without asking. :P Whether it's buzzing/nudging, or popup spam, it's equally annoying and uninvited. XD

unless they make a buzz/nudge blocker, then i guess everyone is stuck with it.

Yeah, but I think the point of them is so that you're forced to see it.  If people can disable them, it defeats the whole purpose. :P

Well, my MSN list is far larger than my YIM one, but Messenger Plus is probably the biggest selling point.

- Plus allows for HTML log files that show: custom emoticions, fonts and handwriting
- It's automatically installed on any computer with Windows XP, but it's usually easy enough to quickly install it if it's not rather than doing some tedious installation/configuration process (though YIM may not be like that, it's more the multi-IM's that are)
- tabbed conversation Windows like Firefox (I'm not sure if YIM does this though)
- Personal messages beside nicknames (again, not sure if YIM allows that)
- Ads are only shown when main window is open, and they're now more like 100x50 pics than the annoying banner style

Everything in the second list does exist with MSN.  However, you'll need both WLM and Messenger Plus.

But yeah, my main reason is that the entire TSL team uses MSN. :P

Not really. If all the other team members were being convinced to use YIM... :P

Which would really take way too long. :P

I'm proud of my "XD" smiley collection on MSN and would really miss it if I had to convert to YIM, which is probably why I hardly use YIM these days. ;P Besides, since I upgraded MSN, it stopped crashing.

Well, there are team members that use it, but I'm not one of 'em. XD

AFAIK, Windows XP doesn't come with MSN, just Windows Messenger which is probably why you haven't found it yet. It's essentially the same thing, but you need an MSN account before you can use either one.

but I need info on the plugin system(didn't know it had one)! Tell me! XD
http://www.msgpluslive.net/scripts/ 8)  Just don't ask me personally for technical support, since I haven't made any scripts yet. :P

And does that mean MSN can actually SEE non-default fonts now? ;P
MSN has always been able to display fonts...  Your chat buddy just needs to have the same one for it to display correctly.

However, what I think IM developers should do is implement on-the-fly font rasterizing (although realtime converstion to something like SVG format would be more ideal), or what's more likely is to have it auto-prompt you to download a font if the chat buddy is using one that is not installed on your system.  Anyway, give it time and you'll see this in all IM clients. 8)  Or maybe you can implement it as a plugin! XD

Wait... that's in plain MSN. ;P
Yup, it's been there ever since MSN 7. There's no way Microsoft would let a useful feature like that be dominated by its competition (Messenger Plus had it for at least 4 years). 8)

and yes, YIM has it too(along with a similar music feature for it, though I am fairly certain it only applies to Launchcast stations)
I should also mention that Messenger Plus had the ability to show currently playing Winamp song information for years, before either MSN or YIM got on that bandwagon. ;P

Well, I mainly meant things like everythig having a "BUY MEH NOW!" button with it, when I said "in your face" advertising. ;P
I've never experienced those.  You can disable the MSN Today thing if that's what you're referring to, and with the ads being far less obtrusive in Windows Messenger Live, I don't even notice them anymore. XD

To answer what Pacman said, the factory default Windows XP only comes with Windows Messenger (I'm not sure if SP2 comes with MSN or not) which is still completely able to connect to the MSN network, despite being 5 years outdated. XD  Still though, as Deloria mentioned you will need an account before using it (just like any IM service).

In my opinion both YIM and MSN have their pros and cons. I prefer using MSN in general, but I prefer using YIM for conversations with more than one person.
