Hi

There's something I've been wondering for a while--about Graham's youth and knighthood before KQ1. We know from the King's Quest Companion that his father, Sir Hereward, was one of King Edward's closest friends, and that he died during Daventry's ''border wars.'' But what of Graham and his youth? Surely as the son of a knight he was part of the nobility. In KQ1, he doesn't seem to have a house (or at least we never get to see it.) Perhaps he was a Knight Errant, going on quests and wandering the countryside
Graham must've done some good deeds before KQ1, and gone on some quests before that...Obviously, he had to have done something that made him look worthy and the right choice for the throne in Edward's eyes, and it'd be really interesting to know of his youth and early adventures.

Well in TSL's history it appears graham "chose" to become a knight after years of frequenting the prattling pony in his youth.

As for official history, ya it appears he's minor nobility.

He and his parents may have even lived in the castle, along with other knights of the land.

We also know, that Graham had a sweet tooth as a child.  He was the the first to snatch particles of pies, pastries and confections from sills and counters where they were left to cool after leaving the ovens. The knights and ladies of the kingdom all knew to have an extra desert on hand for him, whenever he had supper.

We also know that he went to the Palace School, and the Royal University in his youth.

During his training to become a Knight he was known as the best climber in the army.

As a knight in Edward's court; He was a man of privilege...he could eat daily, and sleep secure in his own bed.

According to the official timeline he 19 during the events of King's Quest I.
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

IMHO it makes more sense for Graham to be in his mid-twenties in KQ1 if we're going by RL standards. Esquires didn't become knights until they were 21 so logically, he would have to be in his mid-twenties.

QuoteWhen the esquire was twenty-one, if he lived in days of peace and was deemed worthy, or at any time in his manhood if in days of strife he had performed some valiant feat in battle, he was made a knight;

This will soon be moved to the Timelines thread, please continue this discussion there. :)

Well we are still discussing when Graham may die, if the topic title has any importance...

That may be true in some kingdoms, but not in all (infact the age to become knight in many nations was between 18-21).

But hey I didn't write the age of Graham in the games.

I get the impression that they were knighting people younger during Edward's reign since most of the army and its knights had been killed during wars caused by the lack of the three treasures. The companion mentions that there was less than 100 defenders of the castle left at the time of KQ1, since most of the kingdom's army and defenders had died.

Also I think it might tie into medieval folk history in which some individuals were knighted younger than most for doing some kind of great heroic deed, when rest of the knights were powerless to overcome whatever the problem was.

Oddly enough if you want to go into etymology of "knights', apparently it used to mean "page boy" or "servant". Later on it meant adolescence the period between childhood and manhood.

According to wikipedia the age to become a knight was between 18-21 years of age,

"A squire could hope to become a knight when he was about 18 to 21 years old. Once the squire had established sufficient mastery of the required skills, he was dubbed a knight."

So I guess Graham being a knight at age 19 would not be unrealistic even to real life. It also probably depended on the nation you were becoming a knight in, as different nations had different standards.

Well I'm sure how a discussion of Graham's Age has anything to do with timeline. It has more to do with figuring out when he might die(which is part of this Graham's death topic).

Barring the fact he may have extended his life beyond that of other humans around him by eating the Magic Fruit.

I'm pretty sure that discussion of his knighthood and when he became a knight has nothing to do with the timeline topic, and would probably fit better in the Graham's Knight hood topic, by ReturnoftheDMD. Though it has a bit of connection as to trying to figure out a ballpark number for how old Graham can get by knowing his age through the series.
