He could also purchase anything online, it's a lot cheaper. No idea how it would work over there, but over here in the States it sure is cheaper to purchase it online or at ebay or such (avoiding scammy places, of course :P)

I agree purchasing such things online is definitely an option.  I use NewEgg as a reference because their prices, while not necessarily the cheapest on the block, are a good indicator of value.

I definitely do not advise purchasing computer hardware (or software for that matter) from auction sites such as eBay.  In the case of computer hardware, what your getting is typically hardware pulled from other computers and then resold.  Most of all, you don't get any warranty for hardware purchased from such a site... save whatever warranty the seller offers (which is usually not very end-user friendly and favors the seller).

At least with an online site such as NewEgg, you have multiple avenues for replacement of defective hardware, damages during transit, etc.

And in the case of software... your either getting software from a different country, or your getting pirated software, or your getting software without the packaging/manuals/cd keys.  Case in point... I purchased a copy of Galactic Civilizations II off of eBay not too long ago just for kicks.  What I got was a jewel case with the game... with a Russian CD label and an inkjet printout describing out to install the game on English computers using a Russian installer.

So yea... I say stick with reputable online sites such as NewEgg.  You may pay a little more... but at least your protected from the assorted pitfalls of eBay.

Psst, our game doesn't use DirectX. :P

Yes Neil, I figured that out after the Voodoo Card thread.  However, you can't ignore DirectX.  DX10 is going to be packaged with Windows Vista after all.  :)

My comments to Merlin where more along the lines of good advice as well as some insight into what's going to be happening in the next couple of months in the video card sector.  The cards I pointed out that are less than $100 USD now are probably going to fall down to less than $60-$70 USD once the new DX10 cards start coming out... which means more savings on the consumer level.

Thanks for the good advice! I think I'll actually wait a bit like you suggested.  8)
