Hi

I figured being as the majority of us are here as veteran King's Quest fans, I'd make a thread about what King's Quest means to us individually, and the impact it had on you. First off, how long ago did you begin playing King's Quest, how old were you and which game made you a fan? What did you like about the games, and did the games or any of it's characters influence you or inspire you or your tastes in any way?
My first game was V, I was 5 and it was eleven years ago. I just loved the character of King Graham, the goofiness of Cedric and the whole fantastic world. Graham was one of my heroes, and I even had a King Graham costume and doll (both of which were hand made by my dad) with the amulet and hat included =P and later at around 7 a Cedric stuffed animal, also handmade. I still have the doll somewhere =P
The games have inspired me in that I love fantasy, fantasy worlds and mythology and fairy tales and I always try to research these myths and legends and to this day these games are still my favorite, and without King's Quest I might not have been into fantasy and I probably wouldn't be a computer gamer.

Here is what King's Quest means to me. Since I am around the same age as you, DMD, I do not remember too much from the glory days. But being what I was, how old I was (five, same as you), and being in today's modern world without such games, I find that I have a unique perspective of things. I grew up on King's Quest thanks to my dad, and the graphics were what I had trusted then. Of course Doom was out and other games with more sophisitcated graphics, but I still enjoyed King's Quest, and that kind of graphics, especially the KQ6 graphics, hold a very special place in my heart. So I would always be willing to play a new game with graphics like those.  I think that in today's world, King's Quest has potential, especially since mainstream video games has left behind the adventure genre entirely and mutated it into action-adventure. Of course a few games like myst stayed true to the original style, but the majority have mutated. I believe King's Quest gives me a different perspective in today's world, and I treasure it very deeply for that reason.

I played the original King's Quest 1 on my dad's IBM PCjr.  This game helped me to learn how to spell.  If I spelled something wrong it would say "I don't understand that"  If I spelled something right that you could not do in the game it would say "You can't do that here."  It was a complex game for its time and imagine it all fit on one 5.25 inch floppy black plastic diskette.  My dad still has the IBM PCjr in storage and I set it up and play it every once in a while and relive the old memories.  The IBM PCjr had a 16 color EGA (Extended Graphics Adapter) card, no hard drive, no sound card and came with 128 kb's of memory that we upgraded to an amazing at the time 512 kb's of memory.  It had three sounds at once that was much cooler than the one sound at once but unfortunately this computer never really took off but I will always love it for the memories.  Nowadays, even the 3.5 inch disks are getting more scarce as many people burn cds or usually carry around a flash USB drive with their information.
