Whoa, two person debate.

I tried IRC once.  Too hard for me and didn't seem too friendly.  Besides, I have about 70 people on MSN, and 40 on AIM and that's the way I likes it :D

OMG smart debate, well it is hard since hahah you both got very nice points of view about it, I am a msn user and I do use IRC too, I DO also have to admit like Jesie says in a lot of aspects it is nice, but as neil says also :P msn does gives a lot of other features IRC just dont :D

So at the end I think its a matter of what you like and what would you get used to :P.

Quote from: Jeysie on November 01, 2003, 04:02:10 PMThat's what /notify is for. Like, let's say you usually go by CopyCat on IRC. I could put /notify CopyCat into my program. Now, if I'm logged onto IRC, and you log on too, I'll get a little notice that you're online.
Would I have to log on to the same server as you, or does it work server-independent? P.S. My registered nick is copycat13, but there's only one copycat on the forums I go too, so...

Quote from: Jeysie on November 01, 2003, 04:02:10 PMAs for off-line messaging to contacts, I never understood that. Why not just get their e-mail address and e-mail them?
Using e-mail to send a few lines of text? That's ridiculous, IMHO.

Quote from: Jeysie on November 01, 2003, 04:02:10 PMPlus, AFAIK ICQ is the only message service that works for anyway, so it's not much of an argument against IRC, as it is against everything except ICQ. (Unless that's what you were going for. ;))
You mean ICQ is the only IM that allows messages to be sent when the other is offline? In that case it's everything else against ICQ, which is also what I was implying in some way.

Yes, you'd have to be on the same server. As for the notify thing, I found that the program Trillian lets you map a logon IP to a nick. Neat.

Well, the way I see it is, unless I'm missing something, both send a message... only difference is one is through the ICQ service, the other is through e-mail. I guess it could be a bit like PMs vs. e-mail, but it still seems a little silly to me. I guess it depends on what you're going for... if all you want to do is say "Hi!" or ask a quick question with a simple answer, it might be good. But if it's a lengthy question you'd be better off either using e-mail or waiting until they're online. I mean, most people I know check their e-mail as or more regularly as they log onto IM stuff. ICQ might be a different way to send messages, but I don't see it as being any better or worse than e-mail, and not much of a selling point to me if I otherwise wouldn't need it. Granted, though, I usually don't really need to talk to someone that badly, and on the rare occasions I do, it's someone whose e-mail I know, or I post in a forum with them.

Or maybe I'm missing the forest for the trees again. I've been known to do that.

Well, AIM doesn't do it, and I don't think MSN does either, AFAIK.

ICQ has a feature to turn it on the moment you connect to the internet. So that's surely a faster way to receive a message than starting up your e-mail program? Only one downside, I'm on an [b[intra[/b]net, but not always on the internet, but it sensed the network connection and tried to connect to the ICQ-server, to no avail ofcourse. So I shut that option off. Besides, I think ICQ requires less memory than an e-mail program, so in terms of memory management, ICQ is better than e-mail. This is especially important for me, because memory is sparse on this pc, so I have to watch out which programs I allow to run simultaneously, and Outlook Express is only allowed to run on its own, not together with any other Internet-related program.

CC: Ah, I see. I just use Opera for my mail stuff, and I pretty much always have Opera open when I'm online, so I guess I never thought of it that way. :) Still not useful for me, but I can see why some people would like it.

Completely OT: I wonder, do the current virusscanners cooperate well with Opera's built-in mail?

Say: I'm not a big fan of Yahoo either. In fact, I think I once tried its messenger, but it completely 'bug'ged itself out of the competition.

Well, I use NOD32, and it worked fine the few times I got infected mail. (shrug) Although ever since AT&T set up their own mail server virus scanner, I don't get any infected e-mail anymore.

And would that allow me to have real-time conversations with Yonkey and Say?

And me and Oldbushie! ;)

If you signed up for an MSN account, you could connect with Trillian just like you would with the "official" MSN messenger program, yeah. You could also connect to IRC and ICQ, too, and AIM and Yahoo! if you happen to have accounts with those, in the same program instance.

The time zone difference thing I'm afraid science hasn't figured out yet, though. ;D

Couldn't I only connect to to the ICQ-network, and send messages to people only connected on another network (after I've added them to my contact list? I don't want to sign up for an M$N account! ::)

Heh. I already tried that argument to get everyone to stick to AIM or IRC, and you can see where it got me. :P
