Yes, it seems rude to say pig intestines - but believe it or not, what they don't mention on that site is that the word "chitlin" has also been used as a term of affection for "little ones", for children.  Why, I'm not sure.  But I've heard it used many times (back in the old days.....;))

Maybe it started out as derogatory, cuz some old people don't like little children. ;) But those little children didn't realize the word had a bad meaning and used it on their kids. ;)
