They played Alice in Wonderland in KQ7. The intro was so Alice, and Rosella even looked like her, they both had a bluew dress.

The Magic Bowl was actually based on a fairy tale?  Wow, I don't think I've heard of that one before.  :D

Yeah, but I'm not sure about the name, and I can't find the story itself   :-[
However, I did find many other tales with a magical bowl in them, for example, an Indian one and a even a Jewish one  ;)

That just goes to show how much KQ7 takes after Disney  ;)

Not really... I suppose the animation yes but Disney didn't create Alice in Wonderland you know... ;) They only interpreted it.

True, Bushie!

If you can ever get ahold of Ralph Steadman's interpretation of Alice, it's so twisted and wonderful :3

Well, I assumed Cesar was talking about the Disney movie, as he referred to Alice's looks and her blue dress (did the book mention the color of her dress? I can't recall)  ;)

OK... no complaints about the list yet - So far so good :D
Here's the KQ2 list:
  • Dracula - Bram Stoker's Dracula
  • Mermaid - The little mermaid (et al)
  • Neptune - Roman mythology
  • Red, grandma, wolf - Little red riding hood
  • Genie & flying carpet - A thousand nights and one night
    (aka "Arabian nights")
  • Golden fish - Tale of the Fisherman and the Goldfish
  • Nightingale - The Emperor and the Nightingale
Other fairytale elements:
  • Girl imprisoned in a tower (ie. Rapunzel)
  • Man-eating crone (ie. Baba Yaga)
  • Dwarf, Sorcerer
  • Fairy godmother

I am pretty zarking sure that neither of the books in Alice's story mentioned the color of her dress, and the illustrations were in black and white. She definitely had a bow-less headband in her hair, though. Of course, a former mathematician couldn't really be expected to dwell on such small details...even a left handed one.

And I always thought that the portal in the pool was the generic gateway to The Other World, the fairy realm, the cusp between realms, Joseph Campbell and all that jazz...then someone said that he thought it was based on a Disney movie.

Akril

...WAIT!!!! Dinah's kitten in Through the Looking Glass -- the one who's the Red Queen in the Looking Glass World -- is BLACK...and the cat in KQ7 is black too!!! Good golly gosh, I was so totally wrong! KQ7 is SO based on that Disney movie! Why didn't I notice that before!?

Hey, we're not up to KQ7 yet  ;)

No comments about the list? I'll proceed with the list then. This one is for KQ3 - not as many direct references though, so I'll settle for just one list:

  • The three bears - Goldilocks and the three bears
  • Medusa - Greek mythology
  • Oracle - Greek mythology (though not as obscure...)
  • Pirates & treasure - about every pirate story
  • Abominable snowman - Himalayan myth
  • Gnome, wizard
  • Three-headed dragon kidnapping princess

Storm

Alright, we're up to KQ4... plenty of those there

  • 7 dwarves - Snow white and the 7 dwarves
  • Fisherman & wife - The fisherman and the golden fish
  • Pan, cupid, Pandora's box - Greek mythology
  • 3 hags with eye (Graeae - The grey sisters) - Perseus and the gorgon Medusa (Greek mythology)
  • Ogres with hen laying golen eggs - Jack and the beanstalk
  • Being swallowed by whale - Pinocchio
  • The whole "finding a magical fruit to save someone ill" theme - I don't know if it's an actual fairytale, but I do recall a story like that called "The golden heart flower".

Wow!  Cool list!  I'll let you finish it Storm..intead of doing it myself (unless you want me too...)

Takarifreak -
Feel free to list away... why should I do all the work?  ;)

Katie -
I left out the "Frog Prince" part just to see if anyone would notice. And it worked!  ;D

Well, I can do kq 6 and 7 i suppose, but I've only played through kq 5 once, so i dont know it all that well..and we have to preserve the order!

I forgot about the Bottle Genie... That's 1000 nights and one night as well IIRC. As opposed to the genie of the lamp, the bottle genie isn't a slave to his master and he usually wants to kill the one who released him  8)

I actually was reminded of a traditional story of five blind men who find an elephant, and each feels a different part of it and each one thinks that the foreign "object" is something different. One feels the ear and thinks it is a fan, one feels the trunk and thinks it is a snake, one feels the tail and thinks it is a rope.

Thats my best guess. The story might have been subliminal inspiration.

I was hoping you could do the list of the KQ7 fairytales, with it being your favorite and me not wanting to do ALL the lists by my lonesome self... How about it?  ;)

  • Isle of the beast, beauty & beast - Beauty and the beast

Speaking of which... anyone else see the niftiness of the fact that KQVI has a beauty and the beast story in it, and the voice of Alexander in that particular game is done by the same guy who voiced the beast for Disney's Beauty and the Beast?

super happy power of heart erase dark fruitful night

MangoMercury

Yes, that is pretty nifty.  I did like that film...  And KQ6, of course ;)
