Malicia and Lolotte
« on: May 26, 2007, 01:45:23 AM »
I was just wondering, does anyone know if Lolotte and Malicia were friends. I think in the story it implies that a bunch of faries rose up against Oberon, and basically Malicia was stripped of her powers and Lolotte fled to the other world with only a bit of her magic intact.

As well is Genesta somehow part of the Court of Fairies in Etheria?

Having never finished KQIV, I'm not the best person to answer your question, but here is what is says in the KQ Omnipedia:

Quote
Lolotte
From KQ Omnipedia

The Bad Fairy. She was an evil fairy sorceress cast out of Etheria's Cloudland for treachery and wicked deeds when Edgar was just a baby. In revenge she concocted a scheme to kidnap the prince from his home. Once she had him she changed his appearance and called him her own.

She later dwelt in Tamir, the land where Genesta also lived. However she showed her evil and stole Genesta's Talisman (which was the source of Genesta's powers and her life force).

She also sought the fabled artifact "Pandora's Box" in order to rule the world by unleashing its terrible evil. She was killed by Cupid's arrow by Princess Rosella of Daventry, and after her death, Edgar's twisted form was healed by Genesta.

Some fans have chosen to think of Lolotte as another one of Titania's sisters in their fiction, but this is not the case. In official lore she is just an evil fairy from Cloudland jealous of the fairy royalty's positions.
All that is gold does not glitter
Not all who wander are lost
The old that is strong does not wither
Deep roots are not touched by the frost

From the ashes a fire shall be woken
A light from the shadows shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that was broken
The crownless again shall be king

...wow I was in such a hurry when I wrote that (or added to it, I don't remember exactly). I need to go back over it for grammar and style...

Anyways, the info comes from KQ7, KQ7 official strategy guide (had an article about the background stories for various characters), King's Quest Companion(more or less the same info from the official guide), and KQ4.

As long as the plot is totally awsome I really don't mind who's going to be in it. 8)

I have never thought about that before.  I totally didn't think about how Edgar was kidnapped by two different evil fairies (seriously. what are the odds of that happening even once?!), but it makes sense that they would be pals.  If Lolotte was from the land of the clouds, then she must have at least known about Malicia,  I'm gonna take a leap of faith and say that they were friends.

Unfortunately although Lolotte is mentioned in the KQ7 end sequence by either Edgar or his parents depending on the ending, there is actually very little information given int he game about her. None of it directly connected her to Malicia.

There is even more back story printed in the KQ7 strategy guide by Lorelei, the KQ7 authorized guide, and King's Quest Companion (4th edition). However none of none of those notes directly connect Lolotte to Malicia either.

Strangely the notes seem to go out of there way to make them unrelated fairies. Lolotte isn't even etheria nobility, and although she has some connection to Etheria having been banished from there, she seems to have more ties to Tamir.

Of course there is zero connection made between the two fairies in the synopses of the previous games found in the KQ7 strategy guide by Lorelei Shannon, nor in the manual for Mask of Eternity.

The writers could have done more, but they never did.

I actually think that Malicia was involved in BOTH kidnappings. "Now we know that it was all part of Malicia's foul plot."

Oh, and Genesta isn't connected to Etheria - she has wings.

Ya, I think its possible for fans to interpret that perhaps Malicia was behind both kidnappings (somehow). I think its similar to how people have interpreted that most, if not all of the KQ villains are members of the Society of the Black Cloak in fan fiction and fan games. However, in reality the Society of the Black Cloak was limited to being an idea of Jane Jenson's, that wasn't seen important to Roberta Williams. Roberta has admitted she knew very little bit about the idea, and never thought of using it later.

However, as far as I know none of the original background documents ever actually implies that Malicia was connected to the original kidnapping. The few references in the game, and the more detailed backstory documents in the official strategy guide and companion, never actually specifically ties Malicia to the first kidnapping.

Actually more than anything, it seems the royal family of Etheria, does a good job of pissing off their subjects in some way, making some of them want to get back at them by attacking that which they held the most dear (in which case Edgar becomes their target).

I don't recall Lolotte's reasoning for the kidnapping exactly, as it was revealed in the backstory documents, but as I remember; it had less to do with her wanting to personally take over the kingdom (although she might have tried). As I recall it explains that had a bad attitude (and was misusing her powers), she was banished by the royal family for it.  So to get back at them she snuck back into Etheria, kidnapped Edgar and ran away to Tamir.

Ya, as for Genesta. Ya she has no connection to Etheria in any of the material. She has always been desribed as being "queen of all fairies" and the Queen of Tamir.

That would put her in a position of power equal to Titania who was queen of all fairies in Etheria or Ahi'aorina Culatha Alimehenii who was queen of all fairies in Daventry (KQ novels).

It's true there's lots of "wiggle room" for creativity as far as Malicia and Lolotte are concerned but one thing that's in favor for Malicia being involved in both of Edgar's abductions (aside from that bit of dialogue from KQ7 that Boogeyman quoted) is that Lolotte had, according to Baggins' sources, already been banished by the time that Edgar was kidnapped. How could she have done that, even simply sneaking in, without help from inside Etheria?

The writers behind the KQ series really could have fleshed things out a great deal more all around, which on the one hand (I think) makes the games less immersive than they could be (as they become more a series of puzzles loosely tied together by a storyline rather than a plot driven by characters) but on the other hand allows us to get really creative without spoiling the canon, which is nice.

I think they had an internal document of where they wanted the series to go, and they had an idea of what would happen in which game, and what would be answered in them. KQ, at first, didn't have too much of an over-arching plot, but as time went on, it did. One good deed in KQ5 directly influences the whole plot of KQ6. I imagine that, had the series continued past MoE, we would have gotten official answers to our questions. And that's hopefully what TSL will address.
