Does anyone know how to solve the nv4_disp.dll problem? My computer has it, and while my pc works fine most of the time it's quite annoying, freezing and blacking out the screen every so often and occasionally going to a BSOD, telling me there's an error with the nv4_disp.dll and crashing. Apparently it's a common problem, but nothing I've tried has worked such as making sure I have the most up to date video drivers.

What are your comp specs and are there older drivers available for download?

XP Professional with SP2
Pentium 4 CPU 2.66 GHz
1.5 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT
Driver Version   6.14.11.6218 of nv4_disp.dll

Either I already tried an older version, or I couldn't find one, I don't remember which, I've been trying to solve this problem on and off for awhile.

Edit: I found an entire website dedicated to this problem, http://s13.invisionfree.com/nv4_disp/index.php?act=site, so I'll see if anything on there helps.

I know this is not a solution but since I have had problems with Nvidia cards in the past; that is why I now always stick with Ati graphics cards which have not been a problem at least with all the Radeon cards that I have used.  My current Ati Graphics card is an Ati Radeon 9800 XT which I bought on Ebay for new for about $135.

A possible solution is to completely unistall the graphics card and all the associated junk that goes along with it.  However, first download the latest stable graphics driver for your card and only the graphics card driver with possibly the control panel for it but nothing else.  I would suggest using the Nvidia manufacturer's download site.   You must make sure to switch your graphics card to a standard vga graphics driver for the one or two spots that list your graphics card.  After everything is unistalled and you are most likely in 640x480 resolution with either 16 or 256 colors then you are ready to double-click your download and install the graphics card.  A warning to fully back up your system before you do this just in case and make sure you do a custom installation that allows only the graphics driver and maybe the control panel for your card.  Many manufacturer's now including Creative (Sound Blaster) and even ATI are adding a great deal of useless junk to their install cds and even adding junk to a basic download which forces the smart and knowing user to do a so-called advanced installation to prevent extra garbage (mainly adware) from getting on their pc.  I could do a whole rant about this but I will refrain and hopefully your pc will be in good shape soon.

Ewww ATI, I hate them. Always had Nvidia, then went to ATI and I've only had trouble ever since. I personally prefer Nvidia, but I guess this is just a great example of how peoples opinions differ.

As for the drivers, this is what I found on the Nvidia site... ForceWare.
Not sure if it's what you need, but that's all I could find on the Nvidia site.

I have the NVidia GeForce drivers for versions 61.77 and 66.93.  The first is Oct 2004, and the second Feb 2005.

I guess I haven't updated mine since 2005, and I've never had any issues.  Let me know if you'd like me to upload that one for you to try.

EDIT: NVidia has this page for old XP drivers.

I am planning to work on this at some point and try out your suggestions. Thus far, the annoyance has been far outweighed by the effort and time required to find a solution. :P

I reinstalled Windows on my system, and so far I haven't had the problem again. So hopefully that did the trick! :D
