Neil, my two cents if you’ll have it. Though the jobs sounds sexy, at least in the US a degree starts you on a whole different level in terms of $$$ and potential for advancement. My first job, I started “supervising” people who’d being doing the job 10 years but who had no BA, in truth they supervised me but I got the cash, almost doesn’t seem fair does it.

Well, in terms of $$$ the pay is really good.  It's more of an upper-level position so I'd be making a bit more than double an entry-level position in my field.  Plus, I probably wouldn't get this kind of salary from a job in my field for at least 5-10 years.

Neil, that’s very exciting! Sweet! I guess you do have big choices ahead. I’m sure you’ll make the right decision. Just as long as you stick around here…Good luck!

You said that 40% isn't all that bad, but that you have a hard time hearing people when they talk fast...I would say that since its in the cochlea (where the cilia is located) taht you would have trouble hearing high frequencies, but since it's congenital (appearing at birth) then it may be all frequencies.  If you want me to go into detail about what the cilia do, I can (it's going to be an essay question on my Audiology test on Tuesday, so I better know it!  lol)...but won't go into that unless you (or someone else) ask for it!  :P

What's amazing is all the advances in hearing aids and other types of amplification that occurs all the time!  So I'm sure that you'll have something you want sometime...and maybe sometime soon.

I take it you have analog hearing aids and not digital.  I hear those (digital) are a lot more expensive, but are a TON clearer.  This is all so interesting, but I have got to get off...I think I've been at the computer doing different things for about 4 hours now!  Oops...

I actually have digital hearing aids, they were bought when hearing aids weren't quite as expensive and advanced but still a little steep in prices. ;) As for the cilia problem, yeah I suppose it is high frequencies, but it's like human speech up to those high frequencies for me. ;P Might depend partly on which sections are missing cilia, I dunno. ;) I do know that I can't hear much birdsong, and I can't hear leaves rustling at all unless they are right nearby. ;P

How technical do you want to get?  The cilia that process the high frequencies are located at the beginning (or basal turn) of the cochlea.  The cilis that process the lower frequencies, at the apex, or top.  Because the high frequencies are at the beginning of the cochlea, those are the ones damaged first from loud noises, and of course, in your case, genectics.  But I'll leave it at that. That's really cool, though, that you have digital now.  My friend in the major who is hearing impaired has analog and at the moment can't afford the digital...but I'm sure once she gets grounded in her career, she'll get them!

I've read somewhere along the way there's been a great improvement in digital hearing aids recently. Don't know if our health insurance covers hearing aids, I don't know anyone who needs a hearing aid  (actually one of my uncles does) or who has a hearing aid, so I don't know if they're covered or not.

I have no problem with my kitty rolling around. I just look at the post(s), not at the signature(s), at least not at the same time. Thus, either I see the kitty, or I don't. 8)

AAAAAA!  You guys won't believe what I found out yesterday!  I was talking with my advisor and decided that I'm going to go to graduate school to study Deaf Education.  BUT because I'm going to do that, I'm 40 hours from graduating!  So, I'm going to take 10 hours over the summer and I'M GOING TO GRADUATE NEXT MAY (May 2005)!!  I had no idea I was so close!!

So now all I have to do is decide what graduate school I'm going to go to...got research to do over spring break!

Didn't think there was a way to figure it out, but the academic calendar for the next probably 5 years is up on my school's website.  How about May 7, 2005?

AAAAAA!  I graduate in 1 year and 1 1/2 months!!!!!!  (sorry, still in shock)
