Rosedragon

I first heard about Derek Karlavaegen online, from sites like this. I have got to get the KQ companion. Is some of it found in the KQ collection guidebook? I have the KQ collection, and the guidebook/manual is quite interesting. If you want fanfiction to read, go to the fanfiction thread on the forums and read my stories.

That Derek guy better hope Mannannan is never turned back from a cat. He'll end up being first against the wall.

...with a splat.

Apparantly, they were gone when Derek moved in :P

I wonder what Derek will do if Manannan comes back or is transformed inot a man again, or if Mordack comes to the house. I wonder if Derek knows magic? Is he supose to be from our world, and somehow he found his way to the KQ universe? If Manannan and Mordack return, you'd better run Derek, run!

He knows magic and practises it daily, but he wouldn't go so far as to call himself a mage. He's not from our world, he was born in Daventry.

Mordack is dead, but Mannannan would write Derek into his latest history chapter.

Manannan is still bagged :P

Well technically Derek doesn't know if Manannan is still bagged or escaped somehow. As he mentioned in the book heh heh.

Also the material wasn't all written by Derek Karlavaegen. Some of the material was Peter Spear discussing how the material came into his hands. Some of the material that was sent to him from Derek,  were either written or direct words by other authors including, Gerwain(KQII chronicle), Alexander(A Magical Primer, Iconomancy: A Magic Without Words, KQ3 interview with Derek), Valanice(KQIV chronicle), unknown authors(excerpts from the Sorcery of Old, and KQ7 chronicle)

Also I think there is one refrence in which Derek either refers to himself as a "magician", or someone else refers to him as one. However he is never referred to as a "mage". He's as much of a magician as Alexander is one (Alexander has written essay's on magic).

He's dabbles but is not some all powerful sorcerer.

Also its also mentioned that Derek felt fortunate, if not unduly lucky that Mordack left him uncathed for having moved into his brother's house heh heh.

Shadowfax

Just a quick thought,

I read somewhere that Derek actually disappeared on his last voyage to the Land of the Green Isles and actually passed away there (well...he never returned from the Isles at any rate so there is still room for him to be alive, though I think he would be mighty old, when he wrote the Guidebook to the Land of the Green Isles he was talking about ol' King Alaphim before he had any children...if King Calaphim was fairly old in KQ VI then who knows how old Derek would be?)

Just a thought...
When cities burn and armies turn,
and flee in disarray,
Cowards will cry 'tis best to fly
and fight another day.
But warriors know it in their marrow when they die and fall,
It is better to have fought and lost than not have fought at all.

Deloria

He didn't die there, it says he handed one copy of the guidebook to the queen and kept one for himself, the Caliphim summoned his enchanter and Derek was transported back to Serenia, where he originally wanted to land. It says so in the Guidebook :)

Yep and the copy of the guidebook he kept he later gave to Alexander so he would know a bit more about the customs of hte land before making his journey to the Green Isles (the copy was lost when Alexander crashed on the islands). It was the fact Alexander read a copy of the guidebook that he basic knowledge of the Ancients alphabet and legends which helped him with the cliff of logic, as well as his time in the catacombs.

Later on Derek ended up chronicling the events of Alexander's adventure for the wedding.

Last time Derek contacted our Earth, he wrote an essay on why he didn't believe the events of King's Quest 7 actually took place and might be essentially be tabloid rumors from citizens of their world or that a great dreamer from our earth was altering their world magically. But he admitted his opinion may be wrong.

As for Derek's refrences to King Aliphim(one of Caliphim's ancestors) he was talking about green isles history of the past, not history he was a witness to.

As for when Derek visited the Green Isles? It was actually before Cassima was born. Derek says events of KQ6 happened almost 2 decades from the time he was last in the Green Isles.

Boogeyman

I actually like to think that Derek is the old gnome near the end of KQ3.

He is certaintly old enough, and he was able to get in the castle, even he himself said that no one was allowed in.

Deloria

I don't know...I like to think of the gnome as Nikstlitselpmur :P

Actually Derek is human.

However Derek's writings implies that the gnome from KQ5 is the same gnome in KQ1, and KQ5(he apparently moved to Serenia to live with his grandson). According to Derek, King Graham remembered the gnome in KQ5 and was sure he met him back when he was searching for the 3 treasures.

So its possible that the one in KQ3 is the same one as well (they used the same sprite in KQ1 and KQ3 of course). Though since Alexander never met the gnome previously he had no way to connect the gnome to the one his father met so its not established during his "Daventry People" interview with Derek.

BTW, the book implies that Nikstlitselpmur, or Ifnkovhgroghprm(if you prefer) may actually be the actual Rumplestiltskin, but since he was living in a "backwards" part of the country at the time he was only going by backward's versions of his name (generally the backward's alphabet version according to Derek).

Now the earliest writing we know of from Derek is his KQ1 court chronicle which he wrote the same night that King Graham returned from his journey. But it doesn't give any indication of his age at the time though. However we do know that he was Daventry's court scribe at that time.

Note its not confirmed but he may have also written or helped write the chronicle of how Edward lost the 3 treasures as stated in KQ1 manual (the closest indication we have is Derek says during his chronicle of KQ1 and I paraphrase "elsewhere we have recounted how Edward lost the three treasures").
