The most common glitch when running MoE under later operating systems would be the freezing during certain cut scenes (the axe scene in Daventry, the blacksmith in Realm of the Gnome's and Barren region and so on). This can be avoided by switching to first or 3rd person and by hiding the weapon. Save often though...

I find it an enjoyable action adventure game, but yes, unfitting to the King's Quest series. Roberta also hardly had any hand in its creation.

PS: and i thoroughly enjoyed beheading the chickens  :P

For vista (and I think 7 aswell) the main problem is to get the game started, not the freezing screens ingame, they won't get that far. I think it has something to do with unautherised memory access, at least that is what the code c0000005 stands for iirc.

I may have to resign myself to not playing it on this computer...my older computer really is on its last legs. I'm trying to get rid of all the photos and transferring them onto my new comp so I can have more space. Maybe then I can run it!

I've played the game like 3 times. It's slowly grown on me :p...

But when you read about some of the prototype stuff they had planned and how Cendent software screwed them over, it just makes the what we got all that much sadder.

There is so much it could have been if Cendent would have let them have more time developing it.

Actually I understand she did have her hand in making it. She was involved with all the interviews up to and after the game's release. It's just many of her big ideas ended up being cut by the time of game's release. But she still had a big part in what was released.

The whole killing enemy thing was apparently her idea, she wanted to copy Super Mario/Legend of Zelda 64 kind of action real world adventure. This according to the old issues of Interaction Magazine, and her talkspot interviews.
Well, ya, King's Quest is on Earth. Daventry is very old city from a long time ago. It's in ruins now and people aren't quite sure exactly where it used to be. There are some archaeologists searching through the ruins, they think they know its Daventry. But its somewhere on Earth."-Roberta Williams http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/File:Daventryisearth.ogg

*sigh* Yep, MoE could have been so much cooler.

That being said, Ken Williams has all but apologized/regreted the fact that he sold Sierra in the past. When he was the CEO he pretty much let his designers do whatever it took to finish the games, in the way they wanted to finish them. It was the company sell that lead to Sierra's destruction, and screwed over several franchises, including Space Quest, King's Quest, and to a degree even QFG5 (even that game doesn't have the same feel of earlier games in the series).

On a related note Roberta seemed at the time of its release to actually be pretty happy with the game, even pointing out that it outsold Grim Fandango at the time, when adventure games were doing poorly as a whole. It had overall good reviews at the time.

In a way we gamers are in a way at fault for the direction the games took, and the destruction of the adventure game market.

I wonder though might be interesting if the fan community was to take the game upgrade it into a new engine, and make a special edition so to speak. Trying to add in some of the cut ideas from the game, add the whole new zones (underwater area, and the sea side village/forest, hydra). More of the castle. Less linear world, more land around the castle (as shown in one of the design maps in the making of videos). Spruce up the graphics. Expand the plot, add more puzzles, add in more characters (leprechaun, red capped goblin, etc). Expanded swamp witch encounter, with her in disguise. Alternative ways to defeat the bosses, in less combat fashion, or new bosses that more puzzle oriented. New enemies. Maybe add in thief style features (sneak by enemies in the shadows).

Most importantly go back and change the cutscenes to have voiceovers from Josh Mandel, for King Graham, :), and add in an extended ending sequence, allowing Connor talk to Graham, and get back with his Girl. Maybe meet the townsfolk.

Perhaps that could be a project for POS... after they do a few commercial games, at least. But yeah, that's a really cool idea.

OMG I know, I felt so guilty when I killed a chicken by accident! Although killing the monster who was in the outside toilet was fun to do

You actually get points and experience for killing the chickens, bats, rats, pigs, etc. If you wanted to for the full score (whatever that happened to be) you had to kill them all ;).

Well, I don't think POS wants to do action games, and they probably want to stay out of C&D territory  :suffer: in the future ;).

Probably be better if people from the fps/action game modding comunity were involved.

Did anyone ever get the secret armor or the even secreter "armor" that made Conner naked save for an MoE symbol covering his area?  It was like Leisure Suit Larry all over again!

waltzdancing

I did once.  XD   ;]

I hit the wrong button after leaving the wizards house and saw this apple and clicked. Shock of my life, I was 14. Now it is a huge joke because that type of armor is good all the way through to the swamp.

noonchild

Haha, that's great!  I remember reading about the secret online, that's pretty funny you just stumbled across it.

dark-daventry

Well, thanks to the glory of cheating, I have seen connor's birthday armor. Quite... Interesting, I must say...

I am so embarrassed that I still remember how to find it too.

Has anyone figured out a way to get it running under Windows Vista/7?

waltzdancing

That is one thing I have not figured out yet. I would love to play it on my vista but I still have an old Windows ME that barely runs it. Click to fast and the wonderful blue screen of death zaps me.

If you figure it out can you please let me know?

Honestly I really don't.  I've scoured internet forums and read posts from way back to when vista first came out and no one else seemed to ever find any luck.  The solution seems to be to run a virtual pc or dual boot with xp, two things I wouldn't really have any idea how to do but might give a try later tonight.

dark-daventry

Sadly, I have no idea either. I've tried, but to no avail. I think MoE may be lost for all time now... And it's a shame, because it ain't that bad of a game in it's own right. At least we can get some great quotes from it!

If you have an XP machine it will run on that.

I haven't tried running it under Win7 yet, I probably will sometime next week and if I can get it going I'll let you know.
