I think that's the thing that kept me from IX originally - the first Final Fantasy game I ever played was VII, then naturally I picked up VIII, and then IX was so different from those two I couldn't stand it at first.  Since that time I've gone back and played all of the earlier ones and now I get the appeal of IX so much better.  I think the only Final Fantasy game I haven't played now is X-2.

I wouldn't waste my time. I'm actually ashamed to say I bought the game, with hard-earned money. Unless you desperately need closure for Final Fantasy X, you can do what everyone else did, and just skip it. It's kind of like "Mask of Eternity" of the Final Fantasy series.

FFIX was the first one I ever finished! ....actually, it's still the only one, now that I think about it.

It was the first one I finished too. I think that's why I hold it in such high regard whenever someone brings it up. It had the kind of story that kept you interested. Not to mention the countless plot twists.

It was a good story...
..though the last fight (and the speech ripped directly from Star Wars) were kind of a letdown. The fight because it, and the plot twist with it, came out of NOWHERE, and the speech because it was completely unoriginal.
Ah, I loved X-2. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was a terrible game, but it was so much fun to play! XD As for FFIX, I really couldn't stand it. The characters didn't hook me; the plot was...I honestly don't even remember it. People kept telling me how fantastic it was and I tried to get into it but I couldn't. I got to the point with Quina and kept giving up. :-\

FF8 on the other hand I gave up on because of the Summon sequences. Which you couldn't skip...and couldn't turn off....but had to suffer through every stupid second of during TIMED SEQUENCES. WTF!?!

That was the main negative aspect of that game in my opinion - having to watch the entire summon every time you did it got really old, and was insanely frustrating when you were on a timer.

Agreed. But for the most part, the story was good. The ending was random, but at least the game was able to hold my attention for that long before it dropped that bomb on me. Still, I found FF8's plot twist to be the worst. It was all too convenient.

I loved FFVIII even after a multitude of people told me how horrible it was. I loved the plot and the characters and the combat system and... I'm just insane. XD FFX was probably my favorite overall though.

What was the FF8 plot twist? Spoiler-text it! :)
Coincidentally, all of the characters in the party were orphans when they were younger (excluding Rinoa, I think), and they all went to the same orphanage. The owner of that orphanage was Edea, who was one of the antagonists in the main story arc. The party comes to the conclusion that they have lost their memory because of Ultimecia (an antagonist from the future) wanting to compress time into one single moment, thus eliminating history and preventing time progression. It was also discovered that Ultimecia had been controlling Edea from the future, and then started to control Rinoa to turn her into Sorceress Adel (yet another future antagonist).

So the big coincidence is that despite losing their memories, the orphans were able to grow up and meet up with each other again. Man, don't mess with sorceresses from the future who want to eliminate the space-time continuum.
I might be missing some aspects to the story, but that spoiler is pretty much the one that knocked me over. It sounds like something out of J. J. Abrams' Star Trek, but I still found it ridiculous nonetheless.

That...that...doesn't even make sense!
And the other guy, Laguna, wasn't actually real or something like that?

Laguna's story that is taking place in Squall's dreams is actually taken place in the past. So Squall is viewing Laguna's past memories. When you finish seeing all of those memories throughout the game, you find that Laguna is actually Squall's father. Squall had to be sent to the orphanage because his mother had passed away, and Laguna was still a soldier serving in the army. When Squall was sent to the orphanage, Laguna had liberated a nation from Sorceress Adel's tyranny. I guess this was another attempt at merging timelines by the future witches. For helping the nation, Laguna was elected as the President of Esthar (the nation under attack).
Confused yet?

FFVIII was my favorite. The characters just seemed and interacted in the most realistic ways. They were believable. (Atleast when compared with the other games.) I'll agree the combat/strategy was pretty flawed, and the ending was a stretch. Other than that, I enjoyed it enough to play through a good three times.

FFIX, honestly, I didn't like. I couldn't get around the fact that the people had animal heads and such. It was just... bizarre.

I don't debate, I ramble with STYLE!

César, how could you leave out Tales of Monkey Island? ??? You worked on it!

Demon's Souls is good because you really have to pay attention and be careful with what you're doing, button mashing will only lose you souls.  The first time I permanently lost over a million souls on that game was one of the most frustrating and amazing things I've ever experienced in a game because it wasn't cheap mechanics or a bad setup, it was because I screwed up and was careless when going back to retrieve them.

I loved The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, it'd be great to see another game in that series come out.

And the Gabriel Knight series should never have died, now there was some fantastic storytelling.

I did! But that doesn't mean I've played it! I haven't sat down to enjoy the full thing, just things here and there.

I still need to try out Demon's Souls. I hear nothing but good things.

I also like The Longest Journey and Dreamfall. Dreamfall really got me hankering for a sequel, especially with that ending.

I also would like to see another Gabriel Knight, but from what I'm hearing Jane Jensen is really trying to make a comeback with Grey Matter. She's calling it Gabriel Knight's spiritual successor.

I wasn't sure what to think of Shadow of Colossus when I first learned about it, but I'm glad I was able to experience that game. I'm looking forward to The Last Guardian, but I'm getting the same feeling I did for Shadow of the Colossus. I want to see what the gameplay is going to be like.

Here's another point I'd like to make - one of the main reasons I really liked Demon's Souls was because it took a long time to play.  I also like a lot of RPG's for this same reason, and I did like Fallout 3 despite it's stability issues (hoping New Vegas is more stable).  A lot of newer games really look nice but don't take all that long.  This was a while back, but I remember being absolutely LIVID when I bought a copy of Tomb Raider: Legend and beat it 6 hours later.  I really couldn't believe that it was already over, but there wasn't any real challenge in the game because if you died you only got backtracked like 20 seconds.  There was no pressure to perform and keep track of your own saves.

Hence my reason for only renting Underworld and both Uncharted games.  Plenty of fun and they looked nice, but I beat all three of those in single sittings too.  To me, a game isn't worth $50-$60 if it just looks nice but can be beaten pretty easily in only a few hours.  This is what I loved about Final Fantasy XIII.
