I'm taking a road less traveled. I'm used to talking about games in forums, but I figured that music plays an integral part in the everyday life, so it may be interesting to share musical interests.

My musical background was kind of complicated, because I changed my taste in music on an annual basis. I started liking anything that was fast and loud. I listened to System of a Down, Disturbed, and anything else that fit the bill. But then my dad started to crack down on my tastes and had me listening to a lot of Jazz, Latin, and classic rock. This opened my mind to new styles and new artists, but I never really dropped my interest in the modern rock genre. So overall, even though I started listening to Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Jaco Pastorius, I still listened to blink 182, Linkin Park, and even started listening to older bands that I grew up with, like Third Eye Blind and Goo Goo Dolls.

After a long journey of seeing bands coming and going, I have to say that I've been able to keep up with the best of them. I listened to everything from Foo Fighters to Fall Out Boy. I take inspiration from as much music as possible. I even kept up with bands like Anti-Flag, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Taproot. I have recently been listening to Rise Against. I always liked their singles, but I never really gave their album a chance. It's pretty good.

So what's your favorite genre, band, or artist?

I like classical music the best (Chopin is my current craze).

However, I'm very open to anything - my library includes klezmer, rock, rap, jazz, pop, techno, etc.

I forgot to add classical to my list. I'm a fan of Beethoven (obviously), Mozart, and Chopin myself. Haydn was another good one, but he doesn't come close to my top 3.

EDIT: Every time I update my posts, I end up forgetting something to put down. :P

Some other composers that I'm a fan of are Tchaikovsky, Wagner, and Hans Zimmer (his work in the movies is amazing).

Actually, Haydn is one of the few composers I just can't listen to. I like everything else you listed though.

Only ones I really can't stand are rap and screamo death metal. :P

Some of my favorite bands though would be Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, Within Temptation, Carbon Leaf.

I initially didn't like rap, but then I realized that a lot of rap is actually very intelligent, poetic, and stimulating. Most people (including myself for a while) get a bad vibe from rap because usually, the mainstream radio rap is baaaad.

I'm not the biggest fan of rap, but there are some rappers that I like. Eminem is one of my favorite rappers. He has some raps that make fun of people and contain a comedic effect, but then he'll have raps that are serious and emotional. But for the most part, I find rappers talking about dance floors, clubs, and derogatory terms for women. So I try to stick to what I think is a professional and appropriate. Good rappers are hard to come by.

That's how I am too.  I listen to a bit of everything really; pop, Christian, rock, classical...music isn't one of those things that is SOOOOOO important to me.  I know a lot of people are passionate about their music, not me.  I'd much rather read then listen to music.

Christian rock? What bands do you listen to? I just started listening to Skillet again. I used to listen to Falling Up, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Kutless. Haven't listened to much Christian music recently, but those bands were pretty good.

In case you guys haven't realized yet, I literally listen to just about everything.  :P

My absolute fav band: Marillion, brittish prog rock/pop band. After that... Depeche Mode, Tori Amos, Damien Rice, Death Cab for Cutie, Coldplay, Genesis, etc.
Then I listen to a lot of scores from movies and games. Some of my fav include: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Xenosaga, Last Samurai, The Village, anything by James Horner, James Howard, Hans Zimmer, etc, etc, etc

and, of course, Austin Haynes (And I don't say that because he makes the music to our game, I really mean that --Austin is incredible at reading my mind and turning my thoughts into music. Can't ask for a better musician than that!

I agree about Haynes - he really has a great talent for capturing the feel of the game. Imagine the game without his music - it would be flat and bland by comparison.

I like a lot of genres and could write a novel on why I like each one. A sampling of them are: College a cappella, Pop, Country, and Christian. There are more, but it's few and far between.

LOL, right at the moment?  This kind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxEl_izRxUo .  I've been playing the piano almost my entire life, my wife plays the violin, I listen to all kinds of different music (except screamo and crappy rap), but I have never seen anything like this before.

That was utter genius. If only the Black Eyed Peas could play their own instruments, then they could really stand out. Ahh, the things you find on Youtube.  ::)

Ooooh, I am ALL OVER this thread. Music is a huge, huge part of my life, so I think I'm going to just geek out here.

The first concert I ever went to was a concert of Sister Hazel opening for Pat McGee Band. It was a genuinely fantastic experience. At that age, (8 or so?) all of my music was pretty much designated by listening to the local adult alternative radio station and my parents. I listened to Barenaked Ladies, Counting Crows, Goo Goo Dolls etc. To this day, I still really enjoy that genre. :)

Then I began to branch into my friends' taste in music, which led to Britney Spears and Aaron Carter, but let's not go into that.

Eventually I got into my own taste in music, I began to listen to stuff like Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Linkin Park. I honestly was fairly fond of Eminem. That was probably the time I was into the most "hardcore" stuff in my music lifetime, where Disturbed, System of a Down etc. would've appealed to me. I enjoyed My Chemical Romance, Green Day things like that. My interest in that music largely stayed the same though now my interests in general have drifted rather notably in a more pop direction. I'm now more into Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, Forever The Sickest kids, and such. I really, really adore music that has a meaning and a catchy hook, and I'll admit that the latter is a bit more important sometimes. :P In a general sense, I don't enjoy music that's older than I am, and I ragged on a lot for that. I love the music that I enjoy, and it's a huge part of my life. :)

I went through a bit of a 90s retrogression phase too, with the same bands it sounds like. XD Add in Stroke 9 and Eve 6. :) (A lot of 90s bands with numbers, really)

And I really can get into rap when it's good. I really like the sound of rap with a good flow. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that Love The Way You Lie is one of my favorite songs on the radio as of late. :P

Oh, and I went through a Contemporary Christian phase when I was doing choir tour with my church. It was interesting, but the only band that really stuck was Relient K, whom I can appreciate for their message, not necessarily their religion. <3

Wow. Good forum. Really old school green day, probably 39 smooth is my favorite.  Also, Rancid from the nineties. "And out come the wolves..." was incredible. Best show I ever went to was Rancid in 98, though I will say that I saw Rage against the machine live and that was pretty crazy when they played with wu tang.  Though Rancids was better.  But lately, I can proudly say I am a man, and I listen to Shakira.  Her old spanish stuff is REALLY good. I was shocked she could sing that well, because I mostly heard her in English, which is still good.  But her vocals come out in spanish.  "Donde estan las ladrones" is a great CD.

But, let me say, I can always listen to Cypress Hill.  Its one of the first groups I listened to. Black Sunday is still good to this day.
