If you look at their portrait in the castle, it explains everything.

Ah...I definitely missed it then.  :)  I'll have to check it out when I get a chance to dig out my Windows laptop.  Thanks!

Just because you believe something doesn't mean it's going to happen. And if he hadn't become king he wouldn't likely have stayed forever, as he was heir to the throne of Daventry.
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

You know, I could just see Father Death, Samhain, Azrael, and for good measure Count Tsepish, sitting around playing cards, gambling over which souls will end up in Hades, the Realm of the Dead, Dimension of Death or Ooga Booga, :p. So that they can judge which afterlifes they will move on to (or in the case of Ooga Booga, its all about real estate, and getting new prospective citizens):p.

I suppose either they all have to play cards near Samhain's throne, or Samhain has either magically project himself (or play by proxy), :p.

If Charon gets in on the game, he's a wild card since he works both in Hades and the Realm of the Dead. So you could see Father Death and Samhain competing to get on his good side.

What I always wondered was who took care of the house and Alexander until he was old enough to work? I don't see Manannan doing it. :P The spirit servants I guess?

Maybe the previous slave was actually turned into a cat instead of being killed?  He could have looked after Gwydion and taught him the ropes beforehand.  It'd also explain why the cat is so "malicious" towards Gwydion (such as knocking him down the stairs in the lab); who would want to teach a kid how to do everything in the house only to get turned into a feline?

Then, that doesn't explain why Gwydion was 17 and Manannan had found no further help to succeed Gwydion's 18th birthday...  Maybe Manannan was forgetful, or had just lost his baby-napping knack.  Maybe that's why he had to take all of those "journeys"; to try to find a potential, and easy to steal, successor?

The story that comes with KQ3 is probably a help in explaining the timeing, of when he gets a new slave, and when he kills them, it also talks about why he doesn't like to use spirit servants.;

http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/Prologue_(KQ3)

QuoteAlthough he was powerful, and capable of conjuring up vast armies of spirit servants to sweep his hearth, prepare his meals and other menial tasks with which he would not soil his hands, this solution to his everyday needs was not satisfactory to him. For he liked his solitude, and didn't want a lot of spirits (who besides all else, are quite inquisitive and mischievous) cluttering up his house. Instead, he impressed a very young boy to do his bidding, taking the lad when he was only a year old...

From the KQ4 manual;
QuotePreferring his solitude, the powerful Manannan was only allowed to be observed by one servantboy, who maintained his house and performed all of his menial chores. Of course, Manannan could have conjured up spirits to do his dirty work, but he much preferred to see the toil and strain of a young mortal suffering under his thrall.
And so he went on, every 17 years kidnapping a small boy from his loving parents, then slaying him on the 18th anniversary of his birth. (Occasionally the cycle was shortened slightly, when he unfortunately chose a precocious child that learned too much before his 18th year.) [/quote]

So.... he kidnaps 1 year olds or he kidnaps a new baby a year before he kills his slave? :\ And this still does not explain how he gets his home taken care of when the new slave isn't old enough. :\

No offense, the place looks pretty dusty even with Gwydion supposedly cleaning it (he doesn't do a very good job, LOL)... :p... Didn't see the dead flies upstairs? I'm not sure its so much about keeping the place clean, but having someone to kick around and torture when he's in a bad mood :p...

Well I know Gwydion does a truly awful job sweeping the kitchen.... He sweeps like four spots! And he doesn't even pick up the piles of dust he must be leaving behind. I don't know if the mess is a reflection on Manannan's system or on Gwydion's inability to clean!
Obviously, Manannan kidnapped the wrong twin because Rosella's pretty good at that sort of thing!

Yet, Manannan didn't seem to care much... I don't think he knows what "clean" is... :p... He won't punish Alexander unless, Alexander completely refuses to do his bidding.

You also notice usually Alexander is forbidden from many of the rooms of the house, except for when Manannan tells him to do a specific job. Thus there doesn't seem to be any time for Alexander to do a thorough cleaning job, LOL.

So it does really look like he just has a slave there to be his whipping boy :p...

Here's another question? Who does the food shopping ;). Alexander isn't allowed to go into town.

Maybe Manannan can conjure food without having to go shopping?

Or, perhaps, he hops on the Eye Between Worlds and does his grocery shopping online and has it delivered via Peapod on the Stop & Shop website!

Ya, I can just see people in the Other World taking those messages seriously. Send to where? Lone Mountain Road, Llewdor, Daventry? Uh isn't that in England? Uh we don't deliver to the UK.

That's the other thing that I always wandered about. And where water comes from. Well behind the house maybe? That'd be a deep well. :P

When the remake came out originally if you looked at the barrels in the kitchen it said something about them containing food from town that Gwydion brought up, or some such. Got fixed with the patch/new version though.

There is water that flows off the mountain into a stream on the northside of the mountain. It must come from behind the house. There are some descriptions about mountain and stormclouds feeding the river in the original I think.

Hmm, just thinking, uh if Manannan does all the shopping, wouldn't he know what foods exist in the house? I mean in game the cupboards were bare, and Alexander was down to three food items (some meat, some bread, and some fruit). Shouldn't Manannan have been just a little suspicious of a new bowl and some porridge?

I suspect there was more provisions in the house - dried grain and such. It just wouldn't have been practical for Alex to sneak away, do some stuff that Manny would kill him over, hide the evidence, and cook dinner.

Hence the takeout.

Ya, it does say the barrels contain "foodstuffs"? I suppose if the porridge bowl looks teh same as the rest of the wizard's dishes, he wouldn't notice the difference.
