Significance of the original tagline

The original title of TSL was "KQIX: Every Cloak Has a Silver Lining". Though the title of the project has since been changed to simply "The Silver Lining" for copyright reasons, it would seem that the original tagline retained its original meaning, as the plot was unchanged by the title shortening.

So my question is: what do you interpret "every cloak has a silver lining" to mean?

I originally thought it meant that even the Black Cloak Society, perhaps, has some small redeeming quality or is otherwise not complete evil. But that doesn't quite fit, seeing as the original phrase "every cloud has a silver lining" refers to seeing the positive side of an adverse situation, and "cloak" does not indicate a situation, but rather an institution - the Black Cloak Society. So because the whole "cloak" symbol seems to be metonymy for the Black Cloak Society as a whole, it therefore cannot refer to Graham's predicament; that wouldn't make sense. Or maybe "cloak" refers to the singular object that Graham picks up in Episode 1. Or maybe "cloak" is an extended metaphor for the curse over Alexander and Rosella.

Discuss.

At first, I was thinking that the Black Cloak Society would have the redeeming qualities as well, but due to the events of The Silver Lining, the last thing I would want is for Shadrack to turn into a "good guy". I now believe that there is a closer relation between the Black Cloak Society and the Silver Cloak Society then what was let on. In the ending cutscene of Episode 1, it sounds like the Silver Cloaks and the Black Cloaks are mortal enemies, but the original subtitle of the game is leading me to believe that the two institutions may be related somehow. Maybe, the Black Cloaks used to be Silver Cloaks, but went bad (like the Jedi who went Sith in Star Wars). Or maybe, I've watched too many Star Wars movies and am filled with one too many references to be considered "normal".  :-\

Interesting idea. Something along the lines of "for every Black Cloak, there is an equal and opposite Silver Cloak" - a sort of balance, as suggested by the tagline.

Lambonius

Yes.  It's most definitely a nod to the inclusion of a "Silver Cloak Society" that acts as the yang to the Black Cloak's yin.  How this all ties in to the Daventry royal family remains to be seen.

All will be explained... trust me.   8)
