But you're right that SSL is overkill for the average person (i.e. the creator of this thread) looking for web hosting.

Unless you're Dew. :P

You don't need a secure server to prevent search engine spidering.
True, but not all search engine spiders respect rules you specify in the robots.txt file.  Most of them do, but I know for a fact that AOL bots ignore it and scan the forum.  And if one search engine bot can ignore it, it's possible for more to as well.

As for the rest of it... well, I guess I must apologize and say I *don't* know what to tell you. The adage "You get what you pay for" is truest when it comes to technology. If you want premium-level options for cheap-level cost, you probably won't find less crappy offerings.
It's true that you get what you pay for, which is why it's definitely not easy to find a place that offers exactly what we need for a price we're willing to pay.  Some places offer barely any storage, but tons of bandwidth.  Some places offer tons of storage, but cost an arm and a leg.  Some places give you tons of stuff you'll never need, some places lack the things you do need, etc.  I'm not saying Dreamhost is a bad web host, it's just not the best choice for us (financially).

True, but AFAIK, search engines can't index password-protected directories, either.

Well, no it's not... because if you want business-level features, most companies are going to charge business-level prices. Dreamhost has the best price/value ratio I've seen of companies I personally know have a good track record. (In fact, if I didn't know of several websites who have had good luck with them, I'd be leery of how low their prices are.) (shrug)

right, but this is still just words all over again, so why don't we set up a pay-pal account for you to start showing how much you would really care for then?

(shrug) I'm just telling it like it is. I thought maybe I could help, it turns out there's no help to offer, so that's that.

If you were able to have a donation/payment system, I would be willing to pay a commercial new-game price for the game (as would a number of people here, I would bet) so there's no need to get snotty. If I didn't care at all, I wouldn't have bothered wondering if you folks could get better service in the first place, I would have just said nothing. Yonkey has been disputing me without being antagonistic, I wish you could do the same.

Hahaha, whatever. Long story short, the "donation" thingy is something that has been discussed before, it might be a reality if Cesar would ever approve such, he's been among the few that has given a lot of money into this already anyhow.

I personally use a very cheap, but very good host.  http://www.powweb.com is very good.  5gigs of bandwidth a DAY, and 130gb a month, with 2 gigs of storage.  You will need a domain name *$15 a year* and it's only $7 a month.

Yup, that was the same host that I happened to Google and find earlier in this thread.  They seem to have everything we'd need!  :D  If they still have the same deal in August, maybe we'll switch to them. :)

Hahahah! XD

On the bright side, they're cheaper than what we're paying right now (cuz they throw in the SSL for free :D).  I just hope they keep this same package for a while.  Also, if I find a job before that time, I could help Cesar out a bit with the payment. :P

Might that job involve a madam...and a small room with a dingy mattress? ;P
