Yes, Lamb, absolutely.

Even Dosbox is a little tough for me on Mac, figuring out paths and such. Macs are so user-friendly 99% of the time, the problem is just that I want to use that 1%! I'm just... totally, totally completely computer inept.

I have to check out ScummVM though, I haven't heard of it before.
that just takes getting used to.  the unix paths make more sense anyway.
~/ is homefolder.  instead of c:/users/yourname/
/media/disk or something like that is usually the cdrom
and well.... i guess it's just what you are used too.  I think in unix, not windows.

I would hardly call that not userfriendly.

Even winebottler is hardly what I'd call streamlined.  I think what people like cray and myself would really like to see would be a quick, easy, user-friendly, self-explanatory program that you just open up, select the Windows program, and then BAM, it runs.  Like ScummVM, but for any Windows programs, not just old-school adventure games.
wine frontend.  good idea.  Not everything runs perfectly in wine obviously (yet) but I bet eventually it will.  at that time, if there is a good frontend it may very well be like that.  in a way wine is much simpler than that, but in another way it's much more complex.  again, I am a unix/terminal freak so I find GUIs and stuff like that to get in my way and prefer it the way it is.

basically...I see where you are coming from.  wine should be installed on every mac though, IMO.

Cray, you should try out a frontend for Dosbox--it gives you a nice easy GUI to work with that is MUCH easier to customize than dosbox itself, in my opinion.

For my money, Dapplegrey is the best one.  http://www.classics-for-x.info/csx/dapplegrey/index.htm

Quote from: atec123 on October 15, 2010, 06:26:03 AMthe problem is that the AGS engine still checks for midi capabilities.

Does it keep the game from starting if it doesn't detect it? If not you don't have to worry about it.

yes.  the game gives me this screen:
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2862/screenshotzk.png

and then it crashes.  If I set both audios to autodetect, it gets spast the midi and that error screen, all the way to the disclaimer, but the other sound won't work (and it crashes right before playing the intro AGDI movie thing).  I use OSS here.  It seems that only oss works for digital sound, and only alsa+timidity works for midi.  I really don't know.  Anyway, once I get it to work I will post about it.  I can probably also send copies to linux users to test.  Eventually once I have it all working so that it is easier to set up (if it remains this hard it won't be worth it, but I think I will eventually be able to make it easier.  maybe a setup utility that does all the impossible stuff), then I will send a copy to AGDI, and see if they can upload it, aling with the mac and windows versions.

But you said the latest versions work fine? If so, then you don't need to worry about the older versions.

no.

the latest version (4.1/3.1) do not work yet.  The linux AGS engine doesn't support 3.2 yet.  only up to 3.12.

This midi stuff really sucks.  anyone with linux, PM me and I will give you some stuff to test.  it could just be my weird audio setup.  I am also going to try it on another computer and a livecd later next week when I have time. (I have been "working on it" for a while, but I haven't actually had much time to work on it.)

I am going to switch back to alsa+timidity on this computer and see if that changes anything.  It seems to like OSS for midi and also for digital.

makes it even more confusing....

Well, right now I'm not using any. I was going to use a live cd. My Ubuntu box is not hooked up right now. I suppose I could hook it up quickly to try it out, thoguh.

I'm downloading Dapplegrey as we speak -- let's see what happens!

And I have the entirety of QfG 1-4 on my comp too, so I'm going to try that out with ScummVM too. I have the day off tomorrow -- perfect day for adventure gaming, don't you think?
