Let's Play King's Quest II
« on: November 30, 2010, 09:52:21 PM »
Just to let you guys know, I am working on a Let's Play of King's Quest II, but I've been having technical difficulties while trying to get some good music (read: the same good music that ScummVM plays) out of DOSBox. So please bear with me and I'll get it up as soon as possible. :)

Finally! Part 1 of King's Quest 2 is up on YouTube! Sorry again for taking so long. I managed to find a wonderful program called Camtasia that records beautifully. Unfortunately, I can't afford to pay $300 for it after the trial period expires, so enjoy it while it lasts. :) All comments and criticisms are welcome.

So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

The audio for your voice sounds a lot better.  It's too bad about the trial period, and $300 is a ripoff for software like this, especially when the Mac version is only $100.  If you're still a student, you can get it for $180.  I don't know if that helps.
I have my cake and eat it too, until it's gone.  Then I can't do either.

Thanks. :) I pretty much improvised; I took a small desk microphone and twist-tied it to an old piece of wire which I then coiled around my ear as a makeshift headset. It's crude and looks ridiculous, but it gets the job done.

$180 is also outside of my price range unfortunately; however, I'm also not a student anymore. :/ It's such a nice program too; there are no dropped frames, something which no other program could manage, and it can record the system's audio on my laptop; all others programs require a feature that my sound card doesn't support. Camtasia just did it right out of the box.

From my experience, Fraps works well with DOSBox. The full version costs around $20, and it has worked well with every game I've tried (including KQV in DOSBox).

My information was out-of-date. Fraps now costs $37, but it's still a much cheaper alternative to Camtasia.

With DOSBox? I tried it a while back (and again just now) and it didn't record anything.

Did you launch Fraps before launching DOSBox?

Yup.
I don't think it matters, but I only have the trial version of Fraps...maybe that version doesn't record DOSBox?

(Posted on: December 01, 2010, 10:46:59 AM)

Ha! Got it to work. Had to change DOSBox's output to opengl (had it on ddraw). Cool; thanks, Doon. When my Camtasia trial expires I'll just register Fraps and use it instead. :)

Thanks! :)
I'm going to try to do another one tomorrow but I have a certification test coming up over the weekend that I need to do some serious studying for, so we'll see.

(Posted on: December 01, 2010, 09:11:38 PM)

So Camtasia doesn't record OpenGL graphics. Unfortunately, I only found out about this after I recorded the entire video. -_-;
As I said before, I didn't have a lot of time, and I can't afford to re-record right now, so it'll have to wait until after the weekend. Sorry, guys. :-\

Part 2 is up, with a rather...unusual ending. :P

Part 2

(Posted on: December 06, 2010, 02:16:47 PM)

Part 3 is up! It may still be processing, but you should be able to watch it anyway.
I apologize for the long wait. My room is a well-used traffic area (you have to pass through it to get to the second floor) and there's an intercom in it that could be used to summon me at any time, so I can really only record when I'm alone in the house to ensure that I'm not interrupted, and that only happens about once a week, which puts me in a bit of a tough spot.

On the bright side, my YouTube account has just been validated for uploads longer than 15 minutes! I had no idea that YouTube was doing this; surprise, surprise. I have part 4 already recorded and uploading, but after that I may start doing longer segments, perhaps in the 20-30 minute range. We'll see. I'll post again when part 4 is up.
As I mentioned before, all comments and criticisms are welcome. :)

Nice! It's funny - I was thinking it would be sucky if the protection spell wore off just as you ran into a baddie. :P

Nope. Apparently they're doing it for "selected users with a history of complying with the YouTube Community Guidelines and copyright rules" which is ironic considering that Let's Play videos, the majority of my content, are technically copyright infringement. Even more ironic is that my other four videos are an entire song, a few seconds from Napoleon Dynamite and a couple short clips from anime, which are all technically copyright infringement, so I'm guessing they just did this for everyone who hadn't had any videos flagged for inappropriate or infringing content, regardless of whether or not such content actually existed on their channels. *shrugs*

Yeah. That was so horrible; I couldn't believe that it happened. What bad timing, lol.

Part 4 will be up in a minute. The upload is done, but YouTube is taking its sweet time processing the thing.

EDIT: Um...okay, scratch that. Apparently the upload was aborted...even though...it wasn't. :P Oh well. I'll re-upload it and post when it's done. :/

Ah, there we go, Part 4. Still processing, but the video still works. :)

This is awesome.  I loved the batmobile.

As for the Let's Plays, I think they fall under the Free Use act, probably the music videos too.

You mean Fair Use? I don't think they would, but...well, we'll just hope for now. :)

Okay.
Yeah, I'll admit my understanding of Fair Use is pretty limited, but I think fair use only applies when the majority of your work is original and you're only using a small part of someone else's work inside of it (and properly citing it, of course). With my Let's Plays, the only original part is my commentary.
Let's Plays seem to be getting pretty favorable results, though; this isn't to say that there aren't any, but at least I don't know of any companies that have forced Let's Plays to be taken down due to copyright infringement.

It always baffled me that he ditched his country to find booty. I wonder how Daventry did without him?

Lol! I guess when you put it that way, it does seem a little odd...

Guard: Sire, where are you going?
Graham: I'm off to find my wife!
Guard: But...the kingdom needs you!
Graham: Yes, but this girl does, too. She is locked in a tower and I must save her so she can bear me children!
Guard: Er...what? What girl?
Graham: The girl in the tower!
Seibert: Did someone say "Girl in the Tower"? *plays music*
Graham: What? No, no, not yet. Wait until King's Quest VI.
Seibert: But...but...
Graham: NO.
Seibert: Awwwww..... :'( *shuffles away slowly*
Graham: Anyway, there was a girl I saw in the magic mirror. She's locked in a tower and I must save her!
Guard: Why?
Graham: Why?
Guard: Yes, why?
Graham: Um.....well.....
Guard: Is she in imminent danger?
Graham: Well, not really, no.....
Guard: Is she being forced into some kind of slave labor?
Graham: No.....
Guard: Is there a dragon calling out for her blood?
Graham: Not that I know of.....
Guard: So then send one of your knights to go save her! Why are you going to leave us here all alone just so you can save her?
Graham: .....
Guard: .....
Graham: ...she's hot.
Guard: *facepalm* I thought so.
