The "oic" one's kind of unique.  It's supposed to be "oh i see", like you're reading the letters out loud.  I guess the meaning is similar to "idd".

I only use the most common acronyms, like IIRC or IMO, except for when I'm trying to pretend to be smarter than everyone else by forcing them to ask or search for some obscure expression nobody ever heard of

Also, what's "idd" stand for?

It's the twisting of words, lack of using puncutation, grammar or proper capitilization that bugs me the most. When a sentence starts to look like something else entirely and you don't even know what - it's time to go back to Writing 101 in grade school pal!

Ones I particularly dislike (no offense, guys, because some of you use them here) are the adding of "eh" to the end of something...ones I can think used here are "meanieh" "happeh" and so forth. That's actually using more letters than the real word takes....I don't get it!

I came across an LJ once where, in her profile, the girl said up front she never uses periods or ends sentences in her journal.  What the hell?? Why wouldn't you, I don't get it? What's the point? So every one of her entries was a long, long, LONG rambling sentence, with no punctuation, no ending of sentences, and half the time no capitilization either. ARGH!  It's not that hard folks, and honestly, proper writing is a very useful and necessary thing in the real world...and like common sense, surprisingly UNcommon.

I haven't seen these that often, but when you see them a lot you tend to remember them.  I think everyone knows what "np" stands for, even though the proper response should be "You're welcome".  

Here's what "idd" means.  It's a non-english acronym that Brrr introduced to us.

As for the "eh" and "ah" replacing suffixes in words... it's just for fun!   I guess it's to show the certain way of pronoucing the word?  It's a little more obvious when you read them out loud (i.e. "Get in mah belleh!" - Fat b******).  

lol, Say likes to do the long sentence thing a lot in forum posts.  But usually she puts a lot of commas so you can tell where the sentences are supposed to end.  If there was a complete lack of all punctuation and capitals then I would seriously not be able to read it.  Maybe I could for a paragraph, but not anything longer than a few sentences.

I like long sentences too (well only in dutch, too hard for me in english), but I always use punctuation, because else i wouldn't be able to read it back myself ; )

Long sentences are fine, and Say uses puncutation and all. ;-)  But I mean when they outright don't use it all...that's annoying. To me.

Again, I was an English major and I'm a writer...things like this are what I do!

hahaha... I know what you mean, I get annoyed when someone gives me some 'dirty code' (code that is difficult to read and such)

I understand what you mean.  If I forget a comma someplace, sometimes the sentence takes on a whole new meaning!   It's kind of funny, because if you notice the majority of my posts I tend to edit them, hehe.  I'd read the post over and notice a missing word or punctuation somewhere.

Plus, I do look back at old threads sometimes, and when I notice some of the silly mistakes I made, it kind of annoys me that I missed it.  

I know, I know.  I just have to proofread stuff more often but usually I never have enough time to do that.

It's also true that there is so much common Internet-lingo these days that we don't even realise it.  Like FataliOmega said: lol, ppl, cya, l8r, wtf, lmao, rofl, ttyl, brb, bbl, afk... the list goes on and on, and most of us know what they all stand for, taking it for granted that everyone else does as well.

I usually don't respond to typos, unless they're really funny, unless they're repeated (but that wouldn't make them real typos IMO). However, I have a problem with people who are supposed to have English as their native language and type things wrong (be it spelling or grammar) they should know how to type right. Especially since English is not my native language. And besides, if I'm uncertain about the spelling or grammar of a word/sentence, I either re-write it differently (if it's grammar) or I use the '?sp' to signal the spelling might be wrong (if it's spelling).

My main spelling/grammar issue is run-on sentences. I have a bad tendency to try to pack too many concepts in one sentence, so I have to be careful to go through and break them up.

Yeah, I sometimes notice long sentences in texts of mine too, when proofreading them, so I too have to add punctuation marks.

I may not be a native speaker, but feel free to correct my grammer/spelling... how will I learn from my mistakes if I don't know I'm making them?

I don't mind people making grammer/spelling mistakes occasionaly - I don't expect everyone to be as meticulous as I am and proofread their posts.

The thing that does annoy me is when people KNOWINGLY make mistakes and don't bother to correct them. If they wouldn't spend their time making their posts legible, why should I spend my time reading them?

No it isn't... it's the people who, when someone comments about their bad spelling/grammer, would say they don't give a s**t about it and that they'll write whichever way they want

before i joined here i haven't written english for a year or so ; \ and even then i was bad at it....

Before I joined this board, I was already at other English boards, so I was constantly writing English. I watch the BBC too, with subtitles, so I'm immersed in the English language at a daily base.

I may not be a native speaker, but feel free to correct my grammer/spelling... how will I learn from my mistakes if I don't know I'm making them?  

Well, in that case I shall, if I notice any egregious errors. I suppose I should have amended that with "I generally don't nitpick non-native speakers unless the person invites the matter." I have a Dutch fellow I sometimes talk to online who's pretty obsessive about using his English properly, so he usually appreciates nitpicking.

This is the first forum I posted in regularly... but I was pretty good at English to begin with. I have no idea why - English is usually a difficult language for Hebrew speakers, and I was never in an English-speaking environment. Still, there are words I need to check the spelling to before writing down, and if I'm not sure about the grammatical form of a sentence, I rephrase it to something simpler that I know to be correct
