I haven't heard the name Christina Aguilera in years... She's still around? Wow. That just goes to show you how out of touch I am with the music industry...

Apparently she's also out of touch with the words to the national anthem.

Did she forget the words?!  Oh my God, that's just embarrassing.  I gotta youtube this...I'll return to you...

It's clearly the result of bad karma caused by her excessive ornamentations.

You can literally see like half the people behind her in the stands and on the sidelines turn and mention it to the people next to them.  Of all the songs to screw up, that's the worst.

It's pathetic to me, though, because she's stayed out of trouble for the most part over the past three or four years.  Now she has to do something stupid and etirely avoidable, only to make a complete ass out of herself. ::)  Lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Oh man, maybe I need to watch it again and pay attention to that! :rofl:

Well, at least she rolled with it and didn't choke. But I don't know why she had to mangle the melody so much.

Interesting thought: there was an ASL interpreter there. I wonder if she signed the correct words or signed what CA sang.
So what if I am, huh? Anyways, I work better when I'm drunk. It makes me fearless! If I see a bad guy, I'll just point my sword at him and saaaaaaaaaay, "Hey! Bad guy! You're not s'posed to be here! Go home or I'll stick you with my sword 'til you go, 'Ouch! I'm dead!' Ah-ha-ha!" Ha-ha. *hic* See? Ain't no one gonna be messin' wit' ol', Benny!

I submit that Steven Tyler's version on this occasion was much worse.

[rant]I'm not opposed to improvisation, but all these modern reinventions of The National Anthem just feel like exercises in diva-ism and ego to me. It should be sung as it was written.[/rant]

Yeah, I'm with you, Doon.  That's like most Christmas carols.  Why does everyone have to put their own stupid "artistic" spin on it?  Lame.

And yeah, you're right, Enchantermon, she didn't get all freaked out that she messed up, so that was decent on her part.  But imagine what kind of crap she's going to get tomorrow...oh man...I bet she drank herself stupid tonight!

I'm not opposed to it either if it's done tastefully, but she did it so much that it detracted from the song rather than adding to it.

I just realised that I don't know the lyrics to the American anthem. Where did she screw up? O.o

koko_99_2001

The only reason I know the national anthem was because when I changed schools for my 5th and 6th grade years, we sang it every morning. Granted, there are a couple words I learned wrong, so always have to be on top of it when I sing it!

Incidentally, Whitney Houston's version linked in that article is great; she sang it straight with just a small bit of extra fluff and a strong punch.

You guys are such hypocrites.  ;)  Giving her crap and then admitting to not knowing the words off the top of your head yourselves.

I guarantee you that half the people at the stadium probably didn't even notice.  This is only a big deal because of online bickering.  I don't think she had to "roll with it" either, because she probably was just in the moment and didn't even realize she had sung the wrong words.  As a musician who has sung and performed live many a time, I can attest to the fact that it happens all the time.  It's SO easy to do.  In fact, it happens MORE often with songs that you know really well, because you are so familiar with them that you don't even think about the words as you sing them.  I completely believe her when she said in her statement that she has sung the song all her life and didn't even realize her mistake until later.

And as for her singing style--I'm no huge Christina Aguilera fan, but I do know that one of her main claims to fame as a singer is her ability at vocal acrobatics, so I'm not sure what people were expecting.  :)  Honestly, I felt like her embellishments were pretty tastefully done here and only added to the emotional impact of the song.  People are only harping on about it because they are trying to find any reasons they can to make her look stupid because of the lyrical mistake.

This is yet another example of how pathetic and petty people can be, and how people would rather spend their time smearing those they perceive as more successful, rather than taking responsibility for their own failures.  They should all get a life.

And that's fine. As I've indirectly stated, messing up the words, to me, isn't that bad because stuff happens, even if you do everything possible to prevent it. It's not the end of the world, just a small disappointment.

Doesn't mean she has to use them. Maybe she was probably expected to, but she didn't have to, and I think it would have been much better off without them.

Sweeping generalizations, much? Maybe some are, but not all. I think they were a little cringe-inducing, but you don't see me dragging her through the mud.

At least it wasn't deliberate (like Roseanne Barr's rendition >:().

Also, Arkillian is excused from knowing the words, since she's not American. :P I certainly don't know the New Zealand national anthem (or if they even have one for that matter)!

The *full* NZ national anthem- Maori words included. Normally we only sing the first verse. We're expeced to know the first verse of both the English and Maori version, which I do know. The rest I need a script for.

[spoiler]
English version
God of Nations at Thy feet,
In the bonds of love we meet,
Hear our voices, we entreat,
God defend our free land.
Guard Pacific's triple star
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar,
God defend New Zealand.

Men of every creed and race,
Gather here before Thy face,
Asking Thee to bless this place,
God defend our free land.
From dissension, envy, hate,
And corruption guard our state,
Make our country good and great,
God defend New Zealand.

Peace, not war, shall be our boast,
But, should foes assail our coast,
Make us then a mighty host,
God defend our free land.
Lord of battles in Thy might,
Put our enemies to flight,
Let our cause be just and right,
God defend New Zealand.

Let our love for Thee increase,
May Thy blessings never cease,
Give us plenty, give us peace,
God defend our free land.
From dishonour and from shame,
Guard our country's spotless name,
Crown her with immortal fame,
God defend New Zealand.

May our mountains ever be
Freedom's ramparts on the sea,
Make us faithful unto Thee,
God defend our free land.
Guide her in the nations' van,
Preaching love and truth to man,
Working out Thy glorious plan,
God defend New Zealand.

Māori version
E Ihowā Atua,
O ngā iwi mātou rā
Āta whakarangona;
Me aroha noa
Kia hua ko te pai;
Kia tau tō atawhai;
Manaakitia mai
Aotearoa

Ōna mano tāngata
Kiri whero, kiri mā,
Iwi Māori, Pākehā,
Rūpeke katoa,
Nei ka tono ko ngā hē
Māu e whakaahu kē,
Kia ora mārire
Aotearoa

Tōna mana kia tū!
Tōna kaha kia ū;
Tōna rongo hei pakū
Ki te ao katoa
Aua rawa ngā whawhai
Ngā tutū e tata mai;
Kia tupu nui ai
Aotearoa

Waiho tona takiwā
Ko te ao mārama;
Kia whiti tōna rā
Taiāwhio noa.
Ko te hae me te ngangau
Meinga kia kore kau;
Waiho i te rongo mau
Aotearoa

Tōna pai me toitū
Tika rawa, pono pū;
Tōna noho, tāna tū;
Iwi nō Ihowā.
Kaua mōna whakamā;
Kia hau te ingoa;
Kia tū hei tauira;
Aotearoa

We also sing 'God save the Queen' on the rare occasion, but that's mostly for ANZAC stuff.
