Title: Thundercats remake
Post by: dark-daventry on March 03, 2011, 04:01:15 PM
So, has anyone heard of Cartoon Network's remake of Thundercats, premiering later this year? I grew up watching reruns of the original on Cartoon Network, and fell in love with it. I have the complete series on DVD, after all. Now, a trailer of the remake has appeared online (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWrh1axPj0M&feature=player_embedded).

I loved the original, and I have mixed feelings about the remake. I'm afraid CN is going to screw this up; this remake has such potential, in more ways than one. It could, in my opinion, make Cartoon Network watchable again, if only for this one show. It can also reinvigorate one of the most beloved kids TV shows of all time. But one false move on CN's part, and it's all over. I like the fact that they're going with an anime style; I think the visual style will fit Thundercats well. Unfortunately, the trailer has zero dialogue, so I can't tell what the characters will sound like. If Lion-O doesn't sound at least somewhat identical to the original, I'm going to be furious. And the original voice of Lion-O, Larry Kenney, is still alive. And he can still sound like Lion-O too. I doubt he'd be the voice, but they should give him some part, however small it may be, to please the fans.

All I'm saying is that they better use this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV-HVjuFn6w) for the opening theme.

I'm kidding. ;) But that song is awesome, and it would be better than some of the weird stuff that companies throw together for American cartoons. :P

OMG RELIENT K! YES YES YES! I LOVE THAT SONG! And I love Relient K too. They should either use this, or the original theme. Because the original really is a classic. Cartoon themes used to be good... Now, they almost all suck. Hearing the occasional good TV theme song makes me do a double take half the time.

"I'm Lion-Oooooooooooo..." I remember the first time I heard that song, I was all laughing and my sister was like, "What's so funny?"  I said, "Don't you remember Thundercats?"  She had to Google search to refresh her memory!  I was appalled.

Ha ha haaaa!  Thundercats were awesome. :cat:  But I don't think I can bring myself to watch a remake.  I love the old one too much.

I'm going to give it a shot. Whether or not it's any good has yet to be determined. I'm just hoping that Cartoon Network can announce the premiere date soon. I want to see the remake soooooooo badly.

Yeah, I like that one, too. ^_^ Someone had it on YouTube a while back, but I can't find it now.

you can download the whole demo tape on the interwebz.  There was a bootlegged re release a while back but that got removed, and there was a very small amount of CDs originally.  It's still probably illegal, but it's not hurting anyone.

PM if you want a link I guess.  I probably shouldn't post a link on the forumz.

I love the demo, it's so much sloppier and crazy sounding. and his singing voice was so weird back then.  sounds kinda like a old green day imitation. (dookie, insomniac.  maybe even a hint of 1039 and kerplunk)

edit: wow i just realized that this is actually way off topic.  i just couldn't think of any thing other than relient k when i hear thundercats. :P

Hopefully they do a good job. We see soon. :)

I don't love that trailer, and it has nothing to do with the footage they showed us. Mostly because that trailer itself had nothing to do with the footage they showed us. The song used is completely wrong for it, and we have learned nothing because there's no dialogue as DD mentioned, and not even a sequence of events and images that connect together that we could try to follow.

All I've learned is what the animation has been updated to look like, which is pretty good so far.

Yeah, I was hoping at least for the disembodied voice of Jaga or something. Some kind of narration to go along with it. And of course better music. I'm really on the fence with this remake; I want it so badly to work out, but I'm just so afraid Cartoon Network is going to screw up. They tend to do that a lot lately, and it's sad. This show has so much potential, but it must be handled delicately.

The following was from the Cartoon Network Upfronts:

An epic, all new reimagining of the classic 1980s animated series, ThunderCats tells the story of a hero's journey to fulfill his ultimate destiny. On Third Earth, the kingdom of Thundera is being threatened by the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra, and Lion-O, the young heir to the throne, embarks on a great quest to take his rightful place as king. The unlikely champion must work with his faithful comrades Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro, WilyKit, WilyKat, and his loyal pet, Snarf — who join him on his journey — to save their world from darkness.

I'm a little upset by this. It completely breaks the continuity of Thundercats. Thundera isn't a kingdom. It's a planet. That blew up. Third Earth is a separate planet. One that the Thundercats never originally planned on going to. Mumm-Ra was from Third Earth. Not Thundera. I can live with it, but it's a red flag for me... You can view the original here (http://www.toonzone.net/news/articles/36716/cartoon-network-upfront-2011-coverage).
