Title: Most underrated characters/villains?
Post by: Sir Perceval of Daventry on March 07, 2011, 08:05:35 AM
What are some of the moments underrated villains or characters in general in a movie or book?
For me, some underrated villains are:

Daniel Plainview (There Will be Blood)
Thulsa Doom (Conan the Barbarian)
Rene Belloq (Indiana Jones)
Mola Ram (Indiana Jones)
Osato (You Only Live Twice)

Just to name a few.

Elijah Price from Unbreakable (generally under-appreciated film)

Hmm...I always thought it was nearly universally accepted that Mola Ram was the best villain from the entire Indy series.  He's certainly the biggest badass, and probably the most outright evil.  ;)

Yeah, I don't think any of those guys are "under-rated" villains!  They're all pretty well known villains.

I'd have to say just about everyone from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. That series is my favorite of all the series, and I think it has some of the best written characters from any show, star trek or otherwise. Then again, I'm a die-hard trekkie, so I am a little biased.

Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective.  He's just so delightfully evil.

Albericht from Das Rheingold?

He's so fed up with rejection that he renounces love to forge a ring of ultimate power which will allow him to conquer the world (and therefore have the pick of the girls) :-\ I feel a bit sorry for him. But not very sorry.

Wagner obviously stole that idea from Tolkien! Yes, that was a joke.(http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

Actually, I don't ever blame anyone for not reading the books; they can be tough to get through. But you should at least see the movies. Those who have read the books say that the books are better, but the movies aren't bad by any means.

I've been meaning to read the books and see the movies, but that hasn't yet come to fruition. Life keeps getting in the way, despite my best efforts at telling it not to XD

Haha. Well, definitely do it. And the suggestion I've seen the most would be to watch the movies first, if you can, since there's a lot in the books that didn't make it into the movies.

DD, stop what you are doing and read/watch those right now!!

The books can be hard to get through--I found once I got to Bree in the first book, it picked up the pace a lot and finishing wasn't too tough. I was stuck with the parts before that for a year though, until I saw Fellowship and realized OMG this is amazing and I had to finish reading them now.

Fellowship is one of my absolute favorite movies. Top 3, without question. Might be Number 1 even.

I would, but I've got schoolwork to do. Something tells me that schoolwork takes priority over LoTR...

Nothing takes priority over Lord of the Rings.

Kidding, of course. :)

Don't worry, I haven't been out of college long enough to forget the massive amount of work and pressure it is. :)

Read the books. The books contain poetry and awesomeness not found in the films and IMHO offer a LOT more nerd cred.

So... Sauron just wanted to be loved? XD

XD That's a hilarious non sequitur. I think Sauron wanted to crush the world in an iron fist? Something like that. Melkhor had something to do with it, too, but since he was Sauron's mentor and (if I remember correctly) came to a sticky end, he was an influence on Sauron but didn't directly cause the LotR events.

Also, Sauron is not a dwarf. XD

Well, again, I can't. Not in the middle of math class. But, if it makes anyone feel better, I have the first movie in my netflix instant queue, and I intend to watch it when I'm not so busy with school. Which is to say, at the end of April or beginning of may, at the earliest.

lol I guess that is a good compromise.  They really are worth watching when you get a chance. The books are definitely worth it as well but maybe would wait for those until you are done school lol. It took me a long time to get into them...but the detail that Tolkien goes into for everything is crazy.
