Title: Post your accent!
Post by: koko_99_2001 on March 22, 2011, 07:47:56 AM
Hey! So, here's what you do! You go to Vocaroo (http://vocaroo.com/) and hit record. Then you read off the list of words below and answer the questions.

Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
What do you call gym shoes?
What do you say to address a group of people?
What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?
What do you call your grandparents?
What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?
What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

I've started! Here's my recording :)

This is too funny! ;D I noticed a lot of people say "pa-JOM-as" when they say "pajamas," and I noticed Enchantermon says "gro-sir-ees" when he says "groceries." My friend from Texas/Florida was just here, and she says it that way too.  It's interesting--we're in the same country, yet we sound so different.  Strange! :)

Cool, you remind me of a KQ narrator. You should record some lines.

Also, you're from North Carolina but you don't seem to have any accent relative to me, a native of Connecticut. Are you atypical? Because when I road-tripped through NC, everyone seemed to have a distinct NC-type accent.

Eh?  Why "nutmeggers?"
Title: Re: Post your accent!
Post by: kindofdoon on March 22, 2011, 06:52:50 PM
Because Connecticut is known informally as the "Nutmeg State" (formally as the "Constitution State", because Connecticut was the first state to draft a Constitution).

"Nutmeggers" is much easier than "Constitutioners" or "Connecticutians" or something even more atrocious.

Indeed it does, but I'd never say it in real life, because the word "nutmeg" has been tainted. When someone kicked a soccer ball between another's legs, or when a baseball grounder went through someone's legs, kids would say that person had been "nutmegged". So you see, therefore, why "Nutmegger" is weird to me.

Again, I find it amazing (and awesome! :D) that we're from the same country but have such differences.  The term "sunbreaks" is so commonplace here in the Pacific Northwest, I can't imagine not hearing it.

And Kristen, this (http://labs.csb.utoronto.ca/larsen/sowbug2.jpg) is what that bug it. :)

Enchantermon...you sound awesome!

No, your voice is cute, Arkillian.   ;)

Actually, my sweetie had to write a paper on a dialect for his HEL (History of the English Language, which is hell due to the workload) class, and we started paying attention to even subtle differences between regions.  Apparently, I pronounce "caught" the same way I pronounce "cot."

I like your one though- What is the bubbly carbonated drink called? I call it Soda. My friends and boss call it pop, but although I like them, they're kind of wrong, it's SODA. Just leave it.

I loled XD You're so stern about it.

Actually, a good way of telling a Kiwi and an Aussie apparently is by getting them to say "Six hundred and Sixty Six" If we have a northern Australian and a south NZer here, the difference sounds like "Sux hundred and Suxty sux" (Kiwi) and "Sexhundred and sexty sex" (Aussy) (http://vocaroo.com/?media=vd9IC4rIidXTfGMSF)

Oy... don't even get me started on dialects/accents... :stars: ...there is far too much variation just in the vowels in English (even just within the confines of AMERICAN English for that matter) for my tastes. ::)

I've also heard that a daddy long legs is one of the most poisonous spiders there is, relative to its body size--but it's fangs are too small to puncture a human's skin, so we aren't threatened by it.

LOL, nevermind--the wikipedia article alone debunked that one!

Yeah- NZ doesn't have any wild snakes, but we make up for it by the scariest spiders I can think of. My home town (Avondale) had a local spider called the Avondale spider that they used in the movie Arachnophobia.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avondale_spider) I've seen a few of them in my years in Avondale. These things are HUGE spiders. Adults could strangle a small animal. They use them in movies cause they're pretty timid of humans- they're huntsman spiders. ME, I'm scared of spiders so I'm happy to not be near overgrown spider city XD There's daddylong legs up the wazzo in Kumeu though :/ They're unlikely to be able to bite through our skin though. We have a native spider here though called the Katipo spider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katipo). These ones and the white tail spiders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_tail_spider) are our deadly ones. (Oh man- seeing the wii articles about them- only found in NZ and Australia. I'm SCREWED. The two countries I visit the most T.T

somehow every single person missed  mine.  lawlz
Oh, I didn't miss yours. :) I thought that I posted about your voice being deeper than I expected, but I guess that was something I started typing and somehow never posted.  I can't hear an accent in your voice, though, atec.  You sound like a Westerner if ever I heard one. XD

Here's my accent! (http://vocaroo.com/?media=vmnzWGmniTKGoQfUB)
Somehow I missed this. Yay, Haids! You are nice to listen to.
Ha ha, thank you.  I hate the sound of my voice, especially since I have no accent. ;D
haha i have been on the east coast all my life, and my family has too.  weird.  and yeah everyone says i have a deep voice.  on recording it sounds like i do, i probably just don't notice as much when i'm talking.

Actually, that might make it even more fun to listen to. ;)
Actually, that does sound more interesting XD
It's not really. :P There will be lots of whimpering/gasping if I do the former and I'll probably make less sense and be much more chatty if I do the latter. :P

Okay, fair enough. I wish mine was cool, though, like Arkillian's.  Or Cat's!  She has such a sweet, gentle Southern drawl.

I have a Southern drawl? It definitely isn't as strong as some people's :P

You have a nice Southern drawl, Cat--I've heard some really bad ones that just sound almost fake, but yours is one of the really nice ones!

Atec--ahh, I thought I detected a touch of East Coast in yours :)

I like your one though- What is the bubbly carbonated drink called? I call it Soda. My friends and boss call it pop, but although I like them, they're kind of wrong, it's SODA. Just leave it.

I didn't mean to be stern.  I've just been in so many arguments about which is the right word, especially with my sweetie, though I did catch him calling it soda a few times.   ;D  Actually, we've had a few arguments about how a word should be pronounced, though we'd end up looking it up in a dictionary just to see who was right.

On a different note, Atec and Enchantermon sound really manly.

I've noticed that WriterLove and Cat have slight southern drawls.  I think it's normal for the eastern Bible Belt.

Tess, you have a little bit of a southern accent, too. :) It sounds kind of like some of my family in Dayton, Ohio.

No- it's totally cool. Honestly. I cracked up with laughter when you said it.

Daw- I'm all shy now. I heard that Kiwis have some of the better accents in the world (from poles that actually differentiate NZers from Australians >.> ) and some vote us the best for english speaking accents. I donno if we're the best, but I guess it's ok. You always think that something that is not of your own accent is better though. I'm personally a fan of UK accents, but anything deap and smooth will make my heart melt <3 You American ladies consistently have a nice accent to listen to IMHO. I guess it's cause it's so different to my own.

Dont' you find it interesting how accents go when you sing?

Perfect example: Rebecca St. James. I listened to her quite a bit when I was younger and there was a Christian radio station nearby and I never knew she was Australian until many, many years later when I heard her speak in an interview for the first time. My jaw literally fell open. Her accent was completely gone when she sang, but it was there in all it's Aussie glory when she spoke. It was so crazy. But it made me love her even more. ^_^

Ronan Keating is like that too. He has a HEAVY Irish accent that dissappears when he sings, but then he talks (*faints*) and it's all Irish and stuff O.O IT's like... WOW. I don't know many singers that retain accents- I know if you sing in another language that it's noticable- Ace of Base aren't native at speaking english which is why they pronounce things weirdly. Some sounds just aren't in their vocabulary. IT's interesting...

Oh crap, do we have to record ourselves singing now?! :o *Runs away screaming*

Peter Furler (former lead singer of the Newsboys) had a very distinct accent even when he sang. That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head, though.

Yeah...I'm far less likely to be doing that, lol.

Ahem... clearly, you should do the latter then. :P

I tried to do this a couple times on my laptop... my microphone did not like me... :-\

I may try again now that I have a headset with a good mic on it.
