Title: Need for a private Wiki-like databasing suite.
Post by: Baggins on May 24, 2011, 06:53:33 PM
Hmm, I've started on my PhD research. But I need something that functions like Wikipedia, but can be worked on both offline, and private invite only.

I may ultimately need to put it online on my own website, but I need to have it in such a way that I maintain rights to most material that gets added to it (its imperative that I keep digital rights to my own photographic material).

In the end I would like to be able to include this database on a CD/DVD to include with the thesis/dissertation, as a supplementary work.

I will not use services like Wikia, as you pretty much lose the rights to material (public domain), and its not entirely easy to limit who will access the material (I want to limit vandalism). Wikia also will not let you delete a wikipedia opened through them. So this needs to be something I can run offline or host on my own website.

Basically I need something that's simple to use, will allow to create unique and easy to navigate categories, and insert photos/artwork/diagrams/blueprints, etc, and insert related information.

Any help is appreciated.

You could put it on a private website and password protect it. We have a wiki based on MediaWiki on our company's intranet, and it works really nicely.

It's really easy to use; I'm not sure how easy it is to set up, though.

Thank you, I'm looking into that!
