Title: Cool E3 Stuff
Post by: wilco64256 on June 09, 2011, 12:36:03 PM
A place for rambling about cool things folks have seen from this year's E3.  I work during most of the day so I haven't been able to catch live stuff but there's a lot of cool things I've been catching from watching press conferences and demo videos later.

A couple of games that I'm looking forward to even more now would be Bioshock Infinite and Skyrim.  I was already totally sold on both of these but the additional work that's been done on them over the last few months has improved things even more.  Both games just look super gorgeous and the gameplay is looking incredibly solid.

I'm beginning to wonder if Skyward Sword is ever going to come out.  Nintendo is notorious for delays but this one is really stretching things out.

Others I'm excited for:

Super Mario 3DS - Tanooki Suit's return FTW.

Luigi's Mansion 2 - I really liked the first one of these and the initial impressions of the 3DS version being played at E3 are really positive.

Harvest Moon - The Tale of Two Towns - Always been a big fan of Harvest Moon games.

Assassin's Creed Revelations - Ezio's old!  But he'll still beat the crap out of everybody at once.

Dark Souls - Sequel to Demon's Souls, nothing else needs to be said there.

Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny - Harvest Moon meets Final Fantasy, these are usually great.

Tomb Raider - Looks to be a solid reboot for the series.

You forgot to mention the next Smash Bros title entry which will be on both 3DS and WiiU. Also, the promise of extensive third-party support on the WiiU is quite exciting...

I have to be honest - I've never really been all that big of a fan of the Smash Bros games.  They're plenty of fun, but hearing that another one's coming really doesn't do a whole lot for me.  Don't get me wrong - I'll buy it and play it, but it's not one that I'll be pre-ordering or going to a midnight release to pick up.

And yes Nintendo is finally starting to come around to how crappy they've been for third party developers (really this has taken FAR too long for them to figure out) so the future does look very bright there.

I wasn't really blown away by anything at E3 this year. A lot of the things that were shown were either gimmicks (in my opinion) or titles that we already knew existed. I was hoping for some blockbuster announcements, but I was a bit disappointed. Here's to hoping that TGS announces some killer RPGs.

Haha...I'll believe that when I see it.  Nintendo promised the same thing with the Wii.

Yeah, but when they announced the Wii they didn't have the President of EA come on stage and talk about bringing most if not all their games to the WiiU. And they didn't have any confirmed launch titles from as many third party developers either. Arkham City? Darksiders 2? Ninja Gaiden 3? That's a pretty good start.

Right, but even at this time during this generation, don't you think it's too late to even consider third-party support as deal-maker? By now, most gamers either got a PS3 or an Xbox 360 for their HD kicks. Not saying that third-party support is bad though. It definitely helps the system's value, but there would be no reason to buy another HD system this late in the game. Nintendo should have thought ahead, rather than behind.

Now, I'm expecting killer first-party support for the Wii U, which I am still waiting for on the Wii. Twilight Princess was a poor "waggle" port from the Gamecube version, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was more of what I didn't want, and Other M was a sad attempt at adding an emotional story to a game whose protagonist was known for not talking. This is of course, just my opinion, but it doesn't take away from my buyer's remorse. I just wish Nintendo didn't think the motion-controlling mechanic was going to "make" the console experience. If anything, it killed it.

Of course. But when the WiiU's specs are said to be more powerful than either the PS3 or 360 that's at least some incentive.

Now, I'll have to agree with Lambonius' comment, and say "I'll believe that when I see it."

It's an interesting statement, but I wouldn't jump on a bandwagon if I didn't know where it was going.

I'm not jumping on a bandwagon, I'm just optimistic. And the tech demos looked gorgeous.

I never got around to buying a 360 or a PS3, so WiiU makes a lot of sense for me.  As for the amount of 3rd party support, only time will tell.

I didn't mean to accuse you of anything. I was just using a metaphor to illustrate why I am reluctant on supporting the Wii U. Sorry.  :-[

In your case, I would almost definitely recommend the Wii U to you. I am only suggesting that the majority of gamers out there that purchased a Wii, had picked up an HD console later in the generation (like me). I liked the Wii at first, but the only games that I was buying for it were either first-party titles, or games that are garnered to the motion control mechanic (like Trauma Center or Boom Blox). I wanted to play Assassin's Creed, Final Fantasy, Borderlands, etc. So I picked up a PS3 for my convenience. It seems unfair for the Nintendo fans to have to buy two consoles within the same generation of players who only had to buy one Xbox or one Playstation.

Dark Souls... Dark Souls... Dark Souls!!!!!

I played it while I was there. I got killed in 2 mins. 5 times. There was this freaking rhyno that killed me in 2 seconds.

Reminded me of so much awesomeness that was the first game!

I still don't understand the WiiU (and what kind of name is that?)

The controller looks clunky, tho I never got to play with it. The line was just too long and I didn't have the time to wait. But I don't understand it!!!!! Hopefully, it'll all make sense to me one day :)

I still need to play the first game. I never got around to it, and I heard nothing but good things. Hopefully, I can get it and beat it before the sequel comes out.

You don't "beat" Demon's Souls.  You barely scrape by and if you're lucky you only throw one controller through your living room window along the way.  Then as you breathe a sigh of relief you feel the panic set back in as you realize the whole game just got 10 times harder.

And you love every second of it.

all very true.

*spoilers*

I loved it when they final boss started to drain levels out of me. I was like WHAT???? You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!!

There's not way to save either so if you lost a level, you lost a level, as simple as that.

Ah, e3. I love that convention. I loved this year's convention the best. Why? Cuz I was there. The WiiU doesn't have my attention yet. The only real "HD" demo there that caught my eye was Zelda, and that was just a movie where you could change the camera angle and change the day and night cycle at will. Don't get me wrong, it looked gorgeous, but Nintendo wasn't clear on whether it was real time or pre-rendered.

It's not pre-rendered if you could change the day and night effects on the fly.

Ok then. So the Wii U may be a rather powerful system then. That answers that question.

Well, it was just a tech demo. I want to see what the Wii U is going to actually do rather than what it is capable of doing. In all honesty, it was an interesting feature to have a day/night feature. But it lacks significance, unless the game truly needs it. I need to see more. Hopefully TGS will show something worth mentioning.

Let's hope TGS holds something interesting. I know many years ago when I was just a wee little lad they revealed the controller of the Wii to the world at TGS, so maybe we'll get something as exciting as that?

One can hope. Aside from technical features and controllers, I also want to see more Final Fantasy Versus XIII.  ;D

Well, I just bought Demon's Souls. I should be receiving it within 5-10 business days. Looking forward to the frustration.  ;D

I want Verus XIII RIGHT NOW! That game looks absolutely epic and amazing; and it'll be the first Final Fantasy game I play. I'm quite looking forward to it!

I hear ya. It's going to be amazing. It's also going to be the first Final Fantasy game that Nomura has directed and produced with his own team. And if Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You are any indication, I say that it just might make up for Final Fantasy's downfalls (*ahem* FFXIII *ahem*). There would be no better installment to start off your Final Fantasy experience. You're in for a treat.

Just the very fact that Nomura is behind it has me all sorts of excited. The reason I don't play Final Fantasy is because of the turn based battle system; quite frankly, I hate that. I like what Versus XIII is doing; adopting a Kingdom Hearts like battle system. Plus, the game looks absolutely beautiful running on the Playstation 3. The sooner Nomura gets Versus XIII done, the sooner I can play it, and the sooner he can start on Kingdom Hearts 3.

Diablo 3 is the one that I am looking forward to for the PC.  They are staying true to the original top down style and that is a rare thing these days.
