Title: Error 52 and other bugs that ruin your day.
Post by: Bludshot on August 18, 2011, 09:42:58 PM
So against my better judgement I decided to play Quest for Glory 4 again, knowing full well I may never get to finish it.  Anyone who has played the game will recall the infamous 'Error 52' which crashes the game at several key moments.  But I fearlessly adventured on hoping a patched cd version would guide me through the darkness (not to mention my thief always mad it through without to much fuss).

But lo and behold the heroic mage is foiled my the Mad Monk's tombstone and it's glitch happy guards.

It's always quite sad to see an old game with such gamebreaking glitches, knowing there will never be another patch to smooth things over.  Anyone else have similar experiences? (Not necessarily exclusive to Quest for Glory)

There's always the out of heap space error in KQ5 which comes at the worst possible moment in the game.

Personally the worst glitch for me was the timer issues in Space Quest 4.  Years ago I found myself wanting to play that game again.  The moment I walked into a screen, the Droid O' Death immediately appeared and zapped me.  With some high speed and careful timing I was able to get to the sewers (leaving the unstable ordinance points behind because there was just no getting that then returning it without getting ended.)  But all that unpleasantness really put a crimp in my enjoyment of the game.  Then in the mall, the Sequel Police kept zapping me in the Skate-O-Rama.  But by that point I was still able to scramble away at top speed, though again, it really sucked the enjoyment out of everything.  And then I made it to the end of the game.  I flushed the computer brain icon and...immediately died as the computer self-destructed.  That's when I realized this game that I loved, my favorite in the Space Quest series, had become unbeatable.  It was kind of sad, actually.

A lot of times, timer issues can be worked around with a CPU-eating program like Turbo. Speaking of SQIV, I always found it amusing that if you flushed the SQIV icon, you got booted out of the game. :P

QFG4 was so frustrating. With all its spooky atmosphere, the thing that scared me most was getting a BSOD. >:(

I thought dosbox running the cpu slower was supposed to get past this issue?

In theory it should slow it down yes, but in practice sometimes it doesn't actually work quite right with SQ4 speed stuff for some reason.

Who can forget the EXTREME timing issue with KQ7? The Firecracker of Death! After about 10 retries, you can't take more than a step without being blown up, while attempting to open the tomb. In fact, sometimes you can't even click the Firecracker on the tomb without getting blown up a few times. There's a long play on YouTube that shows that scene with "Perfect" proof of bad programming.

Also, the KQ5 cheese crash AT THE END OF THE GAME! And the SQ6 crash, right after analyzing the hair sample. I had to download a Save file from a website to even play any further, in both cases.

Mortal Kombat (1 or 2, I forget) for DOS used to crash occasionally from lack of EMS or XMS memory.

But at least those aren't as bad as the BSOD (Windows) or the original "F Bomb" ("Type F" crash) on the old Apple computers!

I don't think I've ever encountered the KQ5 crash, except when trying the window's version.

In SQ5, there was Cliffy's rescue. It was hard enough the first time with an old 386 computer. When I got a 486 or P1, it got a lot more worse. You just got in the Eva pod and it's game over already.

Even the almighty Baldur's Gate II isn't safe from bugs. Broken scripts, bugged items, non-working skills and the list goes on. I have to spend a good deal of time on forums for various solutions.

There was Star Wars: KoTOR1 who crashed every 2 hours (more or less depending of your RAM). Save early, save often was the only solution.

I've had crashes in Quest for Glory 3. I've actually had more problems with that game than QFG4...

Sometimes after winning a battle and trying to leave the screen, I would get that script break error (or whatever it was called) that says something like, "Oops, you did something we didn't think about! Whatever it was, you don't need to do it to finish the game."
Okay, I'll just walk back in forth in the field until I win.

Weird, I don't think I've ever had a problem in QFG3.
