Title: Skyrim = Never Ending???
Post by: wilco64256 on November 09, 2011, 06:07:28 PM
So apparently you can keep playing through quests in Skyrim indefinitely.  Even once you finish the actual hard-scripted quets for any game faction the game's Radiant Story system will continue to generate quests for you in that faction.

Mind = blown.

:o :o :o

I need a bigger TV.

oh, god. I'm so not buying this game. I did EVERYTHING in Oblivision, and that's probably why I hated it. The game never ended!!! Now you are telling me it will really never end???!

I just bought a 55 incher a few weeks ago, mainly for Dark Souls and Skyrim.  It takes up a whole section of wall in my basement.  Awesome.  Probably won't pick up Skyrim for a while though.  Dark Souls is still fully occupying all of my gaming time for the foreseeable future.

My understanding is that Radiant Story does not generate new quests per se, but customises existing quests based on data gathered from what you've achieved so far in the game. There may be quest templates, but that'd be more like Daggerfall's random quests I would guess, just a bit more intelligent.

Okay, I got the game 1 day early. First thing I see is the option to update to version 2.0 ??? Requires about 5GB of hard drive space. Start menu looks pretty simplistic. And... looks like it crashed in the opening scene. I'll start a new game and let you guys know. :-\

As I interpreted it there is the radiant story and additional radiant quests past a certain quest line.  I believe the additional radiant quests will be pretty basic. i.e. if you're part of the Dark Brotherhood they'll tell you to go kill someone somewhere.  For the Thieves Guild swag x amount of gold from this household.

Okay it almost crashed again in the same place. >:( So I have to escape, might as well loot the place. :P I went the wood elf. Character creation is all presets, better to get you into the game faster.

Wait. Wait, seriously?

The whole idea of Elder Scrolls game is to have a nearly infinite amount of things to do.

Now you mean they actually did it?!?!?!?!

I AM SO EXCITED RIGHT NOW OMFG. SEE YOU ALL NEVER AGAIN I'LL BE IN SKYRIM!

Daggerfall did it years ago. It's just that they've been finallly able to make a version that wouldn't be as boring (hopefully).

Yeah this is beyond just the flexibility of the regular quests via the Radiant Story system, it actually adds more quests after they're all done.  Yes they'll probably just be fairly basic-type things, but still.  And I assume DLC will include even more quests.

*drools*

Hmm... I wonder if I can incorporate quest generation in my evil construction set creations...

How is this revolutionary? Arena and Daggerfall were already doing this back in the 90s. It's about time TES's game design caught up with itself again.

Arena and Daggerfall (and Morrowind and Oblivion) allow you to continue exploring the world after you win, but they don't create an endless number of quests.

What this is, is an endless number of quests. As in, an endless number of tasks and storylines given to you by NPCs. It's definitely brand new.

Actually, Cray, I think Daggerfall did have randomly generated quests (similar yet different thing).

In any case, I am actually a little worried about this "feature", example: remember the Mages' Guild quest in Oblivion:
after defeating the rebel necromancers' leader Mannimarco in a fairly stand-up duel (made only more awesome by the addition of certain mods) and after the previous Archmage's having killed himself to make it possible
(if you didn't read the spoiler: insert "after epicness" here) you become the Archmage of the guild

My worry comes in thusly: how do randomly generated quests from the NPCs then hold up as something reasonable for a member of the Mage's Guild to personally ask the Archmage to handle especially when his origin story within the guild is the stuff of legends? This may be handled intelligently or it may not be... *sadly envisions the head of the Chorrol Mages' Guild hiring THE ARCHMAGE OF CYRODIIL to collect carrots for a potion of night vision* ::)

It remains to be seen how well they did this...

Arena and Daggerfall both have neverending randomly generated quests. In fact, that's mostly all Arena is.
