Hmm.

Great commerical games that have become freeware:

Star Control 2 (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/)
Awesome, awesome game. Manages to combine adventure, space shooter, strategy, RPG, serious story-telling, and wacky humor all into one package. Best soundtrack ever, too.

Beneath a Steel Sky (http://www.scummvm.com/downloads.php#extras)
A British cyberpunk adventure game. Not the best adventure ever, but a good, solid game, nice plot and lots of kooky, dry British humor.

(Note: I recommend downloading the SCUMMVM emulator itself as well, since BASS on its own *really* does not work well under any brand of Windows.)

Stuff that originated as freeware:

Scorched Earth (http://www.classicgaming.com/scorch/)
OK, this is technically shareware, but the unregistered version is completely playable.

The premise is simple... you get a little tank. You buy weapons and shields for your tank. You then activate your defenses, choose your power and firing angle, and let fly with one shot each turn to try and hit your opponent. The graphics are simple, too. And yet, it's addictingly fun.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Keep trying!  When I wanted to download it, they were using some script that would randomly forward your request to one of their mirrors.  Eventually you'll find a link that works. :)

I was looking for freewares when I found another fan "remake" I knew nothing about (http://www.agagames.com/temp/InstallLSL2pc.exe). That's my favourite LSL game... I should really read adventure games news more often :P

Yonkey -
Feel free to remove the link if you consider this abandonware. They regard it as a fan-made remake :-\

Hmm, if it's a remake being intentionally distributed for free by the authors, then I don't see any problems with linking to it.  It probably would fall under the same category as KQ1+.  8)

IIRC, there was a link to that game in an Inventory Issue (don't remember which one). Come to think of it, I've still not unzipped Issue 15! :o
Anyway, I've already finished that LSL2-remake, been a long time since I played LSL2 and I'm not quite sure it'll run on XP Home (the remake does.

Here's a way to get any video game free(it's legal). Video game patents(in the US) become void after 75 years. So find a game you like, wait 75 years, and then find it again, heh.

I probably should have posted the link to all the Sega demos. Here are the Japanese PC demos. Including Crazy Taxi3, Typing of the Dead2004, and Sonic AdventureDX. Before somone asks, you can play TotD with an english keyboard(don't know about others). I don't know if all of them will work on a non-japanese OS, but many can.

Sega Game Demos (http://www.sega.co.jp/pc/trial_list.html)

After looking around a bit, I found out the difference between version A and B(SonicDX). I also decided that most of the people here, either wouldn't care about the demo, or wouldn't play the japanese version. Here's an english site.

I don't know much about it. It got a 10/10 rating from this site. It has poor sound. They say it is funny.

P.S. I'm going to try to post just one a week. I'm taking up too much of the thread anyways.

Well you need to spend all your free time in making sure that Star Control 4 does come out.  :>  ;D   ;-D
BTW, KQ1+ and KQ2+ were awesome.  I played and beat them both.  I was especially impressed how AGD added so much to KQ2 without taking away from the storyline.  I am so ready for the new QFG2 that AGD will release by the end of 2004.  My guess for KQ9 is it should be released by 2007.  This is only a wild guess since I am not part of the team. :> LOL   !!!

Title: Re:Best free games of all time
Post by: Yonkey on October 13, 2004, 05:42:43 PM
I just re-read that thread. :P  I'll clarify the rule since a few people have asked me.  Freeware is ok for this thread, and by freeware I mean games that were created for free and were always intended to be free.  Abandonware is not ok, and by that I mean games that were created for profit and were always inteded to be for profit (yet someone decided to label them as free and distribute them).

If a freeware game appears on an abandonware site, that's fine with me if that link goes to the direct game.  But if the site contains both freeware and illegal games, then it's obviously not ok and the post that links to that site will be deleted.
Title: Re:Best free games of all time

What about games originally made for profit, but later released as freeware?

Then linking directly to freeware games on The Underdog is ok? it contains both freeware and abandonware.

I can't think of any at the moment, but if they were released by the original company that designed the game, as freeware, then that's fine.

Correct.  Links to specific freeware games are fine.  But links or posts containing links to The Underdog itself are not.  It's a fine line, which is more based on the content of the post rather than the link itself.  So, if the only links you can find to a game belong to sites containing warez/porn/spyware, just discuss the game itself and forget the link.  :P

Another great free game (shareware) is Jill of the Jungle (http://www.pcgameworld.com/details.php/id/2867), a fun platform game from Epic Megagames, the company that created the Keen series 8)

This game and its two sequels are some of the very few platform games I ever finished, mostly thanks to the fact you can save your game anywhere :P
It was one of the games that came with our brand new SoundBlaster 2.0 card, and back then I thought its sound effects are amazing 8)

Pocket Tanks (http://www.blitwise.com/ptanks.html) is another shareware game - a sort of a remake of Scorched Earth. The concept is the same - tanks trying to blast each other using all sorts of fancy weapons.
The upside is that the graphics, sound and controls are much better, and that it has no problem running on Windows, even XP.
The downside - it's a lot less customizable than the original and has less features - playing with the physics and weather conditions is very limited, you can only have two player, etc. Also, you don't REALLY get to blast the other tank to oblivion - the tanks take no damage no matter what you throw at them, you just get a higher score for successful hits.

Scorched 3D (http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/) is another Scorched Earth remake, this time in 3D.
Unlike the other two, it's a freeware. I haven't checked it out myself, but it looks nice and has a multiplayer option (hear that, Jeysie?) ;)
